Cedar X series
« on: April 14, 2007, 04:26:15 PM »

Hey folks... how do the CEDAR X units, specifically the de-clicker and de-crackle units, hold up in comparision to the newest denoising software systems?  I have a chance to pick up th CEDARs at a reasonable rate... but I'm a bit concerned about the investement being a wise one.  Sony, Waves Z-noise, Acon, etc are bringing better things to the table all the time, and the CEDAR units only work at 44 and 48K.  Not a huge deal for me b/c everything needs to end up at 44 later anyway, but still a concern.

I'm on a Mac (which I know is not ideal for restoration work), w. protools HD, waveburner, soundblade, and sonic no-noise for HD.  I get a siginificant amount of restoration of old funk, soul, garage rock etc. on 45 and 33.  I know that the turntable and vinyl cleaning are step number one... but what's the move on the software end?  I'm hoping the CEDARs are still up to snuff with everything else that's available now.  I can't afford the latest greatest CEDAR systems.

Thanks in advance...

I've had a bunch of years with the X series (DeClick,DeCrackle,DeHiss). I've had some experience with the Waves and none with the others. The Cedar Declick and Decrackle are much better than the waves. The DeHisser isn't much better than some others I've tried. The big downside of the X series is that it's reel time only.

i think the Cedar X for what he does at that price is a good idea.
... along with continuibng to work with what he already has.  always need a lot opf tools for such work.

and here is  REALLY cheap one, that actually can work :

the algorithmix plug i hear does good things too :

http://www.algorithmix.com/en/denoiser_pro.htm

for this kind of work, i would not use the SONY.  the ONE THING SONY excels at ius the DE-BUZZ -- better than anything i have tried for straight ~50 or ~60 cycle biddness.

[side note, not having used the X series, but have used Cedar for SADiE after moving on long ago from Sonic Classic/No Noise. A Cedar De-thump for Mac would be very nice. I know of nothing else that compares for low freq thumps & mic pops.
Anyone?]
