Quad Eight gates, what are they worth?
« on: November 10, 2006, 02:59:42 AM »

opinions?

I've got 4 Quad Eight gates in a small "lunchbox" with power supply that were racked up that way the The Record Plant, NY... they also have a second panel in the box that adds additional control over parameters that weren't originally provided (also, custom Record Plant mods)

these were actually the gate of choice at Record Plant because everyone thought they SOUNDED better than the Kepex.

anyone have ANY idea what these should be worth?

apologies if this is the wrong venue in which to ask, but I thought Fletcher might be familiar with these beasties.

thanks.

obviously pictures or more info available to those seriously interested...

Are you looking to sell these? Or opinions on what they are worth?

Q8 are a bit trendy right now. More for the colour of the mic/pre and eq than their utility modules I suspect.
But you could try digging around the Orphan Audio forum.
Traffic there is light and infrequent I might add.

With the Record Plant history, and if you could list all the stars that were gated by them, you might get more than top dollar for them on eBay.................and if they have QE transformers and discrete opamps you could add the "These can be made into mic pres" line.

Not to mention they were used by William Wittman!

BTW: Do they have old DBX vca's?

Everything I've ever tried with "Record Plant mods" has always been an absolute gem of gem's!! ...and something tells me those are no exception.  I always hated the sound of Kepex's so their sound wouldn't be all that hard to beat... but I must say I'm curious as to what some of the other modifications were.

I have a Drawmer DS-201 and a DS-501 these days.  I love the 201 to death... and want to get rid of the damn 501 so much I could scream!  Neither here nor there, just a place to rant about how much I hate the 501 and mention my piqued curiousity about the functional mods done to the Q-8's you have.

Peace.

I picked up a QE NS-120 on ebay for about a hundred dollars. Racked it m'self. Times 4 plus mods? $1200?

No Idea.

Are these the versions with the variable decay and external trigger button?

What are these mods?

The cats at Orphan Audio may be able to give an idea what they're worth.

Okay, sorry I got busy for a moment there (it HAPPENS)

The basic units (the way they came from QE) have only three knobs - Sensitivity, Release, and Attenuation
(what others might call threshold, release time, and range)

so the Record Plant mods ad a second panel adding click stopped/stepped controls for Attack and Decay as well as toggle switches for Internal/External Key select, and -10/+4 level sensitivity.

It comes in a blue RPS "lunchbox" that's about 1/2 the size horizontally of a 4u rack with square rubber feet and a handle on top.

there's a permanantly attached snake with all the XLR ins and outs (probably 10 feet long-ish)

I'll try to get some pictures up later or tomorrow.

Wash them suckers! Looks like a coffee achiever accident!

Seriously - hard to say. As so many things are done ITBox, except for mic pre, compression, eq. Gating is LARGELY a mixing phenom, so you're mainly limited to console-based buyers - who use tape (even fewer!) as anyone else could clean up their own tracks more precisely ITBox.

So - I love Quad Eight and would love to unrack those and put them in a proper console. But noise gates (aside from highly contollable Drawmer) are often $100/channel, slightly more for the cooler brands.

Hey Brian, thanks...

that's rust coming through the blue paint, not coffee!

I know a lot of people who use gates in real time (while tracking) in the analogue domain even though they're recording into ProTools.
naturally usually Drawmers...

whether anyone would be interested in these because they ARE QE is the question.

for the 2 times a year i use a gate, I don't need them...
