Moving on from Logic 5.5 ... where to ?
« on: October 28, 2006, 02:41:06 PM »

After Emagic/Apple pulled the rug on us PC users a couple years ago  Evil or Very Mad  I have still held out bravely and used Logic 5.5 with no upgrades.  Worked fine but I start seeing the limitations now when other software (especially VST's) get upgraded.  The new Battery3 and FM8 modules send Logic into an 'infinite loop' - the software becomes non-responsive.  I have to believe that his has to do with memory and/or horsepower requirements.  Doesn't matter, it's just not really working.

I am now considering to finally jump on the upgrade or crossgrade train.  Should I bite the bullet and move over to the Mac and Logic Pro 7?  It's a lot of money and would be a major platform shift for me.  Then again, I am very familiar with Logic so this might make the transition of my projects very smooth.  Haven't looked at all the VST software I own, but I believe that most of it runs on Mac as well as PC.  I hope that re-registration is not a problem.  It's all within legal use.

Or ... should I stay with my hardware (Athlon64 3200+, 1GB RAM, WinXP) and crossgrade to e.g. Sonar6 or Cubase4.  If so, which one of the two?  What other options should I consider?

For completeness, I also have a TC Powercore and a UAD-1 DSP card inside the machine that I would like to keep active.

Any advice will be much appreciated,

MisterBlue.

I have always believed that you pick the software you  want to run and then buy the best machine that will run it that you can afford.

I agree completely with MisterBlue. The platform you use and how much you like working in it is way more important in a studio than what piece of silicon makes it crash.

Usually I'm not a die-hard macophile, but I'd recommend switching to Apple and marvel once you find out just how great the latest version of Logic is. All this while you keep working without having to relearn things.

I know at one time Sonar offered a "trade-in" program to help people move to their side of the playing field.

Your gear is completly compatable with Sonar.

Its been years since I used Cubase so I am no help there.

I agree - a copy of Cubase SX 3.1.1 or Cubase 4 will do you good.

I used Logic for many years on the PC until Apple dumped support. I went through the same thoughts on "what do I get"? I eventually decided to go with Nuendo. I'm completely happy with my choice. Just recently, I had to do some edits in some old Logic files. I had not used Logic in the last few years. Man, I was amazed at how messy Logic feels, now that I'm used to Nuendo. I supposed I might feels the same coming from the other side as well. Anyway, Nuendo or Cubase are both great and very easy to work with. No major complaints here.
