Problem with acoustics
« on: October 23, 2006, 10:56:53 PM »

What kind of thick fabric would you guys suggest using for curtains in a control room? They will cover my closet doors and window to cut down reflections in the room.

Note:I will be using these in conjunction with 7 realtraps

There are such fabrics available and I'm sure someone will check-in with the specs, but, things as "blase'" as U-Haul, moving blankets can work quite well(You can buy them new at the U-Haul store or any "rental place".). If you choose carefully they might even look nice? Or at least "interesting", if made into curtains in some "proper" way... Oh, AND they might be be "cheap", by comparison -- if that's any consideration..?

Of course all of these things are quite limited in their abilities, noise-reduction-wise, but can be a worthwhile addendum, none-the-less...

As usual, I agree with Teddy.

If you're set on Curtain, you're looking for a heavier weight material (20-25 lb) and you want to be able to bunch them to get some extension in the lower frequencies... please be advised that this is NOT a true LF device (curtains) but shear of thin drapes will really only affect Higher frequencies and dull down (or boom up) the rooms...

So, heavier weight, installed in such a way that they are still punched when covering the areas you want to cover (extra width in the drapery) and you'll have something that will work down into the mid range effectively..

Does that make any sense?? I'm tired.. long day (week, month, etc...)

Here's a link to packing blankets at the UHaul site:

I might have to pick up a couple of these...

Awesome, thanks for the link man.

Based on the size of the room and the positioning of the desk, how far away should I be from my NS-10's? On the desk they're about 3'4'', but on stands behind the desk it's about 4'5''

Another option for curtains is theater velour.  Plus, it has all sorts of fun colors!

The 25 oz. stuff is pretty effective for taming "dry wall ringing".

Shit. Ok, my bass traps are set up as follows(following fairly closely to the schematic):
1. Hung vertically in the corner behind the desk up to the ceiling
2. Hung flush to the wall horizontally behind the right monitor
3. Hung flush to the wall horizontally behind the left monitor
4. Hung flush to the wall horizontally in front of the desk(as drawn in schematic)
5. Hung flush to the wall horizontally in front of the desk, beside RealTrap #4(as drawn in schematic
6. Hung vertically in the corner(on the schematic, the left 21' slash mark) up to the ceiling

I'm getting some nasty low bass cancellation(120hz-sub lows) from my mix position. I'm using NS-10's and they are positioned 3'4'' away from my chair and 1.5' away from the RealTraps. I have a Sony subwoofer below my desk on a Gramma riser. When I put my head close to the wall( the bottom one on the schematic) I can hear the bass bumping pretty well. But when I stand on top of my bed with my head close to the ceiling I can REALLY hear that bass....

Using my Rat Shack sound level meter there is a 10 db increase from the ceiling above my mix position compared to a reading from my chair

Moving the NS-10's back about 6'' and putting them on stands helps a bit, but the bass still doesn't punch and feel as deep as it does near the ceiling above the bed. Like a dumbass I should have waited until AFTER my mix appointments tonight and tomorrow to futz with all this Mad ...

I'm not sure if the bass is being cancelled out by the room or the positioning of the monitors. The monitor placement now is the same as it was in their previous spot(where the bed is now) and there didn't seem to be any cancellation.

Here are a bunch of photos. Sorry about such poor quality

The biggest problem I see is that most of your traps are flat on the walls rather than in corners. Almost every trap I see could / should be moved to the wall-ceiling corner directly above where it is now. If you'd like to approach finding new placements scientifically, rather than hit or miss, here's my suggestion:

Start playing some low-pass filtered pink noise loudly through your speakers. If you need a pink noise source you can loop this 15 second clip in any audio editor:

www.ethanwiner.com/pinknoiz.wav

Or download the NTI Minirator from the Acoustics Info section of the RealTraps site. It's best to pass the noise through an EQ and roll off all the highs. That way you can turn it up loud without having to listen to the irritating hiss sound. Then walk around the room, and climb up on a ladder, and listen in corners for where the noise sounds the most bassy. That is where a trap should go.

Shall do, Ethan thanks for all the help. Not many product owners go around personally answering all their customers questions on these recording forums (if there was a thumbs up emoticon it would go here). I think another case of beer will be needed in order to trick my buddy to come over for a 3rd night.
