<TERMITES>
« on: October 23, 2006, 06:50:48 PM »

No it's not a new band, but I went to move some of my firewood that was along side of my building and powdered sawdust fell out of some of the wood. In the past few weeks, I have seen strange flying bugs outside. I had a client in today and he said he saw a termite. Man. just what I needed with my busy season around the corner. If I tent my building, will that gas affect electronics?  If I set a 10Khz tone on my console and crank it for a few days straight, will it drive them out ? LOL  I haven't seen any effects of those critters inside, but how would I know. It would be almost impossible to view every inch of wood in the building. Anyone ever been in this type of prediciment ?

Don't mess around, get a reputable pro over there now.

Here in the south these things can do serious damage very quickly.

FWIW you may have another type of insect but just like any good porn star get  it checked out.

FWIW - I live in Rochester (please shoot me).
In my firewood pile I have also seen some powder- and bugs.  However, because of the exquisite climate up here there is virtually NO termite problem at all.  So, if you re lucky, it may well be that some other type of bug is involved.
However, I'd definately have a pro check it out.

Hey Ken,

Ironically I used to play The Bug Jar in Rochester.

And hang at the House of Guitars.

And Lake Conesus.

First thing is to get rid of that bug food along side the building.
Rotting wet wood is prime eats for said insects.

Kind of late in the year for termites as they are usually active
early summer....
And pray they are not Formosan Termites...those nasty little
critters have made it as far north as NC and are spreading quickly.

A pro will probably use Termidor....he'll tell you only
a pro can buy it, but you can purchase some here...
http://www.doyourownpestcontrol.com/termidor.htm

and good info here.
http://www.termidorhome.com/partners/TermiteTruth.asp

Get rid of the wood, and any other stuff up next to the structure..trees, shrubs,
rotting stumps, old wood, trash...etc..
dig a trench(maybe 6inches deep)around any damaged area,
at the foundation level of the building...spray the termidor...
and cover up the trench...use sparingly, the stuff is powerful.

again, it is late in the year for Termites,
so maybe just ants or something less damaging.
and reapply whatever in the spring...or at first
site of Termites.

good luck.
Paul

If you pull off the bark and see mud tunnels, then most likely you have termites in your firewood. If you see 1/8" holes in the wood, could be powder post beetles, though I don't know thier range. Powder post beetles lay eggs on the wood that hatch then burrow into the log where the remain as larvae unyill maturity a few years later, emerge and lay eggs again. They're not a real problem in a wood pile, but they are if they hatch in your newly built house Shocked . You see a lot of powder post beetles in southern Ohio and Kentucky. If you have termites inside your house, you should see mud tunnels from the woodpile to the structure. Like everyone else says, I'd get a pro over for an assesment  because you really need to know what your looking for. And keep the woodpile away from structures. I put mine in an old animla shed, up on pallets, that sit on cinderblocks covered by aluminum. Nothing comes between me and my woodpile. Nothing. To great things in life are a 6 ft. high mound of cow manure and 4 cords of hardwood, dried two years. I'll settle for horse manure, but I'm never burning oil again.

I too lived in Rochester for 8 years, did my undergrad work at RIT. When I was slogging around there it was Scorgies Down Under where we routinely slammed danced (what the kids call moshing these days). Snake Sisters for food and attitude and Mt. Hope Cemetary for great walks and cross country skiiing. We still go sailing up on Sodus Bay with friends once in a blue moon. Great place....to bad about those winters.

Yes, there are different types of termites.  The kind that live deep in the ground, and...some other kind.

Anyway, definitely have an exterminator come out to check.  They know the signs to look for, both inside and out.

We've had a few here, and they got rid of them pretty quickly.

Regards.

Did they use gas with a tent? Just curious about gas vs. studio gear

I was just on that "Termador" site and the company that makes it is "BASF" the same company that makes/made audio tape. Since Tremador comes from a lineage of analog tape, I might give it a try.
I just remembered something, their tape was crap!

Unless the gas they use is seriously thick, like the kind of stuff used in the trenches in WWI, I really can't see it doing any damage.

If you want to be sure, get some large plastic bin-liner bags and tape them over any exposed tape heads, faders, pots and switches.

Bruce Swedien worries about termites : - )

Justin

edit: if the tape leaves sticky patches of its adhesive on the sides of your gear, get it off with isopropyl. Wonderful stuff Isopropyl, I use it all over the place, not just in the studio. It really adds an edge to a Bloody Mary.
