24\96 and mp3 192kbps
« on: October 18, 2006, 12:48:58 PM »

My name is David Rummelhart and I am new here!  Right now I having I am having problems trying to get and listen to a final mixdown.  Sadly to say I am using crappy speakers to listen through and I have no other gear that will listen to 24\96 recordings, so I rendered the songs to 192kbps and started to listen to them through other speakers and started to hear a completely different mixdown.  I do know that MP3's are a compressed version of the song, and that 192 is transparent CD quality, but is it my imagination that I am actually hearing the real mix, or that rendering the MP3 is changing the mix?

Why not use high-quality SRC and downsample to CD-quality WAVs and burn those to disc instead?

r8brian is free and very high-quality (make sure the quality setting is set to "Very High"!).

"Act as"? Not sure I follow... it will sound very similar to the 24/96. r8brain's conversion is very good. The result will certainly be leagues better than 192kbps MP3 (using *any* codec).

well to me the MP3 acts as a phantom or a transparency to the real thing so how does 16/44 differ from 24/96?  To me when I have brought it down, I lost levels in the mix.  That is what I mean, or should I say I hope you understand now what I mean

for bit depth:

proper dithering can result in little audible loss of detail; and few or no added audible artifacts.

for sample rate:

afaik, the purpose of a high sample rate is to help the dsp be more accurate.  once you processing is finished, the removal of frequencies that are not heard is not that signifcant:  as long as the sample rate conversion process is clean (big caveat).

OK, something constructive...

Properly done, converting to 44.1/16 will be more like the original 96/24 file than the MP3.  Just the file size difference alone is a good tipoff.  This would be different if MP3 were lossless, but it isn't.

Try both, and see what you hear... er, I mean, hear what you hear.
