AAh. Very good.

As an afterthought , can anyone tell me how to make sure that JAM is burning ISRC codes correctly with my SONY DVD RW DW-U21A drive?

Burn your disc with Jam, with ISRC codes enabled.

Check the disc for codes with the Terminal app : - )

Thanks,
Just checked that but it only seems to be displaying the track indexes (PQ codes). No sign of a ISRC code (IE-AQZ-06-Blah Blah Blah). I know there is one there because iTunes picks up the name of the single from the Gracenote Database.

Am I missing something?

Fergal,

We prepared a document which covers this stuff - it's mostly for non-technical artists & producers, but it explains the basics of CD-Text, ISRCs, Gracenote, etc.

Thanks David.

I do know what the codes are about though. It was just accessing the codes from an authored CD which was the problem.

I can never have enough resources for technical info, so thanks.

Ok. I've another question.

The original CD I was talking about showed no ISRC codes. Fine.

I checked another CD which I had put an ISRC on in the Terminal which was this:

IE-ATH-06-00014

In the terminal it came up like this:

Track  1 ISRC: 0P4057200041

I tried it in JAM and Toast Titanium (as MT Groove suggested) and it came up like this:

ISRC   0@40<1500003 in Toast

ISRC   0@40<1700003 in Jam

I tried the same with the single of Britney Spears "Toxic" and I got:

In Terminal :Track  1 ISRC: 0@40<2001003

In JAM : ISRC  0@40<2001003

In Toast: ISRC  1@4055801230

This is strange.

I tried "Extract Audio Copy" but couldn't get any ISRC codes to show but I haven't used it before so I'm sure there is a way.

Anyone know of software that shows the codes in the format I'm used to?

By the way, I found that if you type "drutil subcodes" into the Terminal in OSX you get a list of all the commands to do with your drive.

Jerry,

I think this is the best tip I've seen all year! Simple, elegant and fast. And Unix-geeky Very Happy

Thanks very much for this little gem. Very nice....

Cheers,

Go back to OS X start up the Terminal application.

to read ISRC codes, type: drutil subchannel

hit return, if the codes are on the disc, it'll show 'em.

if they're not on the disc, contact ifpi.com

also: to read CD-Text codes, type: drutil cdtext

"drutil" is short for drive utility.

here something simple i made for OSX to do just that.
it just greps out the ISRC data from drutil and puts it into a text file for you...

Ooooo, Very geek-ey Jerry. Me like-y.

P.S. Do NOT fuck anything up in the terminal application. You WILL be sorry.

Here's a link to the various things you can read with drutil commands:

Seems as there's whole Universes of Geekdom over there.

This is weird. I've tried several CDs and drutil subchannel says there are no ISRC codes?

I've tried the drutil subchannel function on several CDs, old and new. The Immaculate Collection by Madonna doesn't show any ISRC codes. A hit collection by Gyllene Tider (previous band with Per Gessle from Roxette fame) will display ISRC codes.

Why is this? Are there several ways to add ISRC codes to a CD? Or rather, are there perhaps several ways to extract ISRC information from a CD?

Simple answer, many CD releases were pressed without, or never assigned ISRCs.

They're not on the disc.

Over the last few years, it's become a trend to embed them in the disc.
