I recently bought a Sony C-800G on GS that came with a non-original power supply (the seller failed to mention this in the ad.) I checked with the maker of the power supply, and he said that it has no tubes in it. The original Sony power supply (AC-MC800G) has two 6AU6As (the normal, shorter ones). I've read here that these tubes have a rectifying function: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/6481308-post7.html

I will probably try to rent one of those original power supplies to hear if there is a difference in sound, but I'd like to hear from others that has experience from using alternative/modded power supplies on tube mics. Is there anything in particular one should listen for?

I know that some Sony tube mics (like c37) have some part of "mic amp" in power supply.
How your mic sounds?

Clear and tight. Strong. But with both buzz and hum, probably because of the power supply (being made for the electricity system in Australia, not Europe). I'll get it serviced tomorrow (seller pays).

Nobody wanted to fix the power supply without drawings. So I arranged a refund from the seller.

Just spotted this thread.

Did you notice what the serial number of the C-800G was?

We had one stolen several years ago, but not the case, cable or the power supply

Sorry, didn't think about that. If you PM me I can send you the link to the ad (bought it on Gearslutz).

This is something buyers should be aware of when buying any tube mic without an original power supply. Many tube mics stolen from studios are taken without the power supply for ease of concealment.

The issue was discussed in the ad thread. The seller said he bought it from someone who said he had went through a hostile split-up with his studio partner.
