I couldn't Stand it Anymore... Scuba anyone??
« on: August 27, 2006, 09:58:31 PM »

Okay.. I'm sorry that obviously this was more pressing than doing the graphics for the bass trap post, but here a few of the still photos from my recent dive trip to Bonaire... (Talk about off topic!). I was expecting this to be a macro kinda trip and we saw plenty of small stuff... I want bore you guys with posting video, but we got some good stuff. Here are a few of the more succesful stills. (I'm still getting used to my digital still rig!)... Let me know if any of you are divers. We have a "guys only" yearly trip that is four audio guys including me that are good friends, but it would be a trip to make the group large enuf to "take over" a live aboard for a week or something similar!!

Cheers  Cool Fran

I thought you'd never ask!

So, do you do some northeast diving, or just on vacation to the "hip" places? I have a buddy who ice dives lakes in a wetsuit (he's an Eskimo, what'd you expect?!). As much as I love the warm climate stuff, there are really some good northeast spots if you go at the right time of year. I also hear Canadian lakes are warmer and more interesting than one might expect, with plenty of wrecks. I haven't put this to the test yet, however. Still, it's no substitue for the Carribean! Gotta make more time to to get away and get wet.

Bonaire is one of the best dive spots on the planet.

I cut my teeth in New England diving off of Newport, Jamestown, Plymouth and sometimes in the the great lakes, Niagra River (you could hear the falls) and doing search and rescue work for the local police.

I moved to the south and haven't gone since, the water here is just too muddy until you get a decent clip offshore.

Yes, diving is something I miss and hopefully will convice my wife that it's safe so we can share it.

Diving:: I dive anywhere as long as the water is at least 78 degress F and the vis is over 60ft!!! So, in other words, no Northeast diving for me!! I learned up here in lakes and quarries and I have no desire to dive in the ocean off Long Island or NJ... I tried in Maine once and it sucked.. (with 7mm suits and 40lbs or lead!!)..

I can almost dive in the warmer climes with no wieght!! but I still wear 8-10 lbs so I sink like a rock when desired....

I've been diving since I was 16 (30 years+) and have multiple certificationa including, Adv Diver, Rescue Diver and Enriched Air Nitrox. I'm an avid photographer and videographer and I wish I could go every other week!!!!

but... NO COLD WATER for me anymore!!

(I'm a PADI Divemaster, NSS-CDS Cave Diver, and occasional mixed gas 'technical' diver)

I don't get to dive as much as I like and I'm getting too old for cold Northeast diving!

from my trip to Costa Rica last June,
we were surfacing toward our safety stop and looked down into this stream of hundreds of cow-nosed rays...

I DID do a dive there Terry when we played (with Cyndi) at Atlantis a year or so ago

(you know, that night that you IGNORED me) Rolling Eyes

Nassau diving is, sorry, relatively boring.
but any diving is better than not diving

You know Fran, there IS some great Northeast wreck diving, but I agree that, at my age, the cold is getting to be a drag.

Definitely drysuit only for me now.

have you ever thought about the U-853 off Block Island?
a really interesting dive, and you can't get lost in a submarine because it's basically just a tube (although the ocrridor branches to TWO at one point in front of the conning tower) so it's a reasonable penetration even for a non-cave trained diver.

Cool dive, I remember being closer to Montauk but then again i also got a concussion working on a charter boat that summer.

Lake diving was always creepy, especially since i was normally looking for a body.

I remember one dive in Plymouth MA when we reached a thermocline thousands of eels were standing on their tails in a row with their heads in the warmer water. If i only had a camera and a hint more visibility.

That and a night dive where we were almost bumped by a giant great white, which had supposedly dragged a woman off to her death the night before at that very same Newport RI dive spot. That was not a fun trip back to shore...

WW and Fibes... most excellent guys!! I'm so glad there's a few avid divers on this board. I really don't like cold water diving. I'd love to do some of those wrecks but it's gonna be Bermuda or the Coral Sea for me.... The only SE Asia diving I've done is day diving from Phuket Thailand.. (I was in BAngkok on business and hoped on down to Phuket for 5 days). .. It was excellent because it was sooo different from the Carribean... Lion Fish and lots of soft corals on every dive... Anemonoe fish all over plastering the reefs and anemonies... just like a post card even though the vis was only 50 ft... BUT becuase there was so much very little stuff in the water we stumbled across not one, but two Whale Sharks on one dive!! I shit you not.... Got to snorkel with the first one for ten minutes and then on our second dive the next one (about 45 foot) came right up to us and we swam next to it for several minutes before a flick of the tail and it was gone.. One of my most awesome dives in over 30 years!! Of course, no cameras or video... (so I could be full of sh_t!!) but I'm not.....

I'll post some more of my favorite shots when I get a chance.

Heh, I'm no longer an avid diver, since i move to Joja the pickens are slim and so is time.

The only thing i loved about NE cold water dives is the lobster.

That and the ear pressure thing scares me.

I know, equalize often.

Bad pun.

Hawksbill Turtle in Bon Aire a few years ago

I'm usually out of film when one comes by but not this time!

Bon Aire isn't what it used to be, but it's holding up a lot better than Grand Cayman is
