Adelaide
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:24:06 PM »

Any Aussies (or other folks who've been) have any comments on the city of Adelaide? My brother-in-law has a job offer there, mostly what they've found is that it gets very hot there.

I have two friends originally from Sydney, so I asked them. One said, "it's the city of churches", in a very non-committal way. The other said, "yes, I was there once, as a stop over to Kangaroo Island".

Is there more to be said about this place?

I haven't been there in many years, but it is a nice place. Close to one of the best wine regions in the world - the Barossa Valley.

Well respected University.

Close enough to Melbourne to make a weekend getaway a realistic option.

OTOH...

Close enough to Melbourne to make a thriving high-end recording and post industry virtually impossible.

Yes, it gets hot there in summer. But, it's Australia. It gets hot everywhere. Very Happy

Cheers,
Tim

What do you want to know?
A mate of mine is director of  Kojo, a collection of busnisses related to movie production, and they do fairly well.
The main studio is Mixmasters and they also do gear brokerage.
The fishing is great, the surfing is great....the Great Whites are mean and hungry,
the wine from Coonawarra is better than the wine from the Barossa but its a two and  a half hour drive.
Most of the state is semi arid dessert but the coastal fringe is real nice.
Your country has one of its major military sattalite comunications bases at Pine Gap in the north of the state , so if you feel homesick you can hop in the car and drive up for a chat and a beer.

Honestly, I want you to tell me it sucks so I can tell them to not go!  Crying or Very Sad

Isn't there a Paul Kelly song where he says he will never go to Adelaide again?

he doesn't make it sound too enticing:

Adelaide
(Paul Kelly)

The wisteria on the back verandah is still blooming
And all the great aunts are either insane or dead
Kensington Road runs straight for a while before turning
We lived on the bend it was there I was raised and fed
Counting and running as I go
Down past the hedges all in a row
In Adelaide, Adelaide

Dad's hands used to shake but I never knew he was dying
I was thirteen I never dreamed he could fall
And all the great aunts were red in the eyes from crying
I rang the bells I never felt nothing at all
All the king's horses all the king's men
Cannot bring him back again

Find me a bar or a girl or guitar where do you go on a Saturday night?
I own this town I spilled my wine at the bottom of the statue of Colonel Light
And the streets are so wide everybody's inside
Sitting in the same chairs they were sitting in last year
(This is my town!)
All the king's horses all the king's men
Wouldn't drag me back again
to Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide, Adelaide...
