I kind of agree with Bob... well, not really.

Bob Dylan, a luddite? I cannot believe it!

Of course, he is right about CD's being small.

Although I've heard some great stuff in the last 20 years I can't help but mostly agree with Bob.

Listened to my old vinyl copy of The Stooges first album last night with my 16 year old kid.

We couldn't believe how spacious, and fat this recording sounds. Anyone searching for a clue as to how a great rock record should sound need look no further. John Cale, producer.

On the other hand, I'm sorry I revisited Highway 61. The Columbia reissue on that gay fuckin 180 gram vinyl I bought sounds horrible, all compressed and hardly a puff of low end.

In my opinion Dylan is right.

I'm not sure if I'd go as far back as 20 years but pretty much all our reference CD's are from the mid 90's or older.  Crying or Very Sad  The current state of things on the CD front is very sad.

I have the impression that if the CD is expected to get a lot of radio play "they" (i think everybody from the producer, musicians, mastering engineer and record company representatives) will demand the CD to be "louder".

The result is a soundstage that is completely flat and uninteresting.  On top of that more often than not there will be  10% THD created on the output when the CD is played back.  Why this happens is well documented!http://www.tcelectronic.com/TechLibrary#Mastering

Another complaint I have is that instead of "stereo" all CD's should be marked with "Two-Channel Mono".  Ok so there is some left and right panning but that's pretty much it.  As always there are exceptions to the rule.

Spokesman once again.

He'll deny it.

I particularly like the quote:

"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."  (Bob Dylan)

Part of the problem comes from not emptying the accumulated sound out of the bass traps in the studio. Overcompression leads to higher amounts of buildup, then ya gotta use an icepick or something to chip it out.
If you don't keep the diffuser polished it starts to build up and then just gets all over everything....  I've been recycling it as pink noise, but somehow it stills gets on the CD.

To quote Bob...

"Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody."

I like that quote too. He's right. many artists are pristinely recorded at high cost, and there's no feel or merit in it whatsoever. It's all sound, but no feeling. There are notable exceptions- Keane spring to mind.

I think he's talking about sound like a sauce.

they have sauce all over them.

the sounds are ultra big and thick so that the music gets lost..on purpose.

Slightly off topic but I saw him playing in Reading PA last night.

Very inspiring! Amazing versions of some of the older tunes. Really brought new life to them.

I just wish he would have picked up a guitar for at least one song.
