HELP! Sadie deleted my projects!
« on: July 08, 2011, 12:23:56 PM »

Crisis mode...

I was restoring multiple projects from archives (AIT drive) to a client's USB drive. Got a few warning messages that Sadie couldn't delete the previous folder (even though there wasn't one there) but it would continue copying and they seemed to be ok.

Went to open a regular project on the main drives and the "Projects" folder was completely empty! Rebooted and it was still empty. Did a system restore and now all the project folders are back but with today's date/time and with nothing inside (no project components).

No, I have not been good about keeping back ups so almost all the projects are completely missing.

HELP!!!

I'd power down and call Sadie, then you'll likely need to call a data retrieval company - most of the files are likely still there.

I guess this something like this happens to most everyone once - it's worth hanging an external drive off your machine and copying projects over every day. For <$200 you have a copy of every project on your machine.

Data retrieval company, now. Don't do anything else (unless you _____really______ know what you're doing), because it might just mess up the file system more.

Since the HD isn't blown, retrieval shouldn't even be too costly. I dropped my laptop a few weeks back and the HD started making odd sounds and wouldn't boot up. After looking at the pricing of data retrieval in such cases, I decided to just bite it and bought a new HD. Luckily I had just done the backups. I also tried to re-calibrate the read head by wildly swinging the HD around. It was fun but only helped in taming the aggression.

You start doing backups after it's all gone. I keep an external HD to which I at least try to dump projects.

Someone emailed me to try GetDataBack and it seems to have been able to recover most (85-90%) of my files. I'm copying everything on that drive to an external before moving forward on opening or running anything else.

Computers... Ugh!

We lost a hard drive in our server. It cost me $350.00 to get it recovered and was done by a local computer tech. I normally can do the recovery myself but in this case the server used Linux. One time in the past a hard drive jammed when a bearing failed and I called around and got estimates - boy was I surprised. $2450 to $3500 to get the information off the drive and one place told me the "sky is the limit" and could not give me a firm estimate. I now back up EVERYTHING.

Glad things are working out for you.

I've understood mechanical failures are the most tedious to recover. This means opening up the HD and swapping the magnetic discs o another HD. Needs a clean room and some fancy lab coats. The $2450-> numbers look pretty familiar, I saw similar figures when my laptop's HD died.

Maybe look for the sadsav files. These will be present somewhere in the system if the .edl's were ever opened on your system. SADiE sometimes change the directory with a new version it seems. They are like automatically saved .edl files that SADiE saves in the background. Saved numerous projects with these. I assume version 6 has retained these very important files.

Worst case they will be on the system where the project was last worked on, i.e. your clients PC.They are saved versions of EDL's and MSU files only.

You can open them using the open temp file command in V5 upwards I think.

Good luck.
