Ok, found some more little gems...

"...Multi-band dynamics processors are your best option; compared to standard compressors, they're more transparent, ..."

"...A spectrum analyser is useful to examine frequency response against other recordings, and can also be invaluable in spotting low-end problems that may not be audible on nearfield monitors..."

"...To make a track sound louder when it's already peaking close to digital full scale, use a digital limiter such as the excellent XXXX plug-in or XXXX XXXX built-in Energizer. In most cases you can increase the overall level by 6dB or more before your ears notice that the peaks have been processed..."

"...compression or limiting is never used on classical music..."

Look, I know it's mean.  But sometimes the end justifies the mean.

From the guy who just recorded and mixed your album,

"Of course I can do a better job mastering your album than if you take it to an outside mastering engineer after all I am familiar with the way this is suppose to sound"

Myths from some mastering engineers...none of whom are on this web board <GRIN>

"Don't worry about it I will do a little tweaking after you leave it will sound great"

"well of course it doesn't sound good right now but what till it gets duplicated"

"I really know how to make this sound great after all I did concert sound for (insert name of famous act) for years and I learned all I needed to know about mastering from him"

"this is a really good album too bad you aren't able to afford our deluxe mastering package you would really hear a difference"

"I don't use expensive audio gear because it is only designed to be used by professionals and you want your stuff to be listened to by the average Joe"

"These speakers may not be what you are use to hearing but trust me your stuff will sound great outside in the real world"

"I only use this equipment for really important mastering clients like you for most others I use something else"

"I have an advanced degree in mastering"

"I only divulge this information to my most prized clients"

"If I were you I would not  take this to (insert name of local CD production company) they always do terrible work I would send it to Disk Makers instead"

"I don't have a lot of fancy acoustical treatment and never had my acoustics checked but I copied the plans for my studio out of Mix magazine so I know it sounds good"

"I use to be a recording engineer for (insert name of famous person) so I know how to master"

"I paid top price for all the gear so I now it is good and I read Bob Katz's book twice so I really know how to master your stuff"

and the most famous of all.....TRUMPETS PLEASE!!!!!

"I am a certified mastering engineer"

One brand of CD-R sounds better than another brand.

POW-r dither 3 sounds better than POW-r dither 2.

Don't know about these, a better manufactured CD will have less errors, and therefore less playback interpolations, and therefore better sound.

I do think #3 sounds better than #2 Smile

Matching RMS is an accurate way to set perceived levels.

Gold connectors sound best.

Geoff Emmerick can hear + or -3dB @ 54kHz.

88.2k sounds better than 96k after it's downsampled to 44.1k.

Radio program directors will play the single that sounds louder.

Having (insert name here) master your record will increase the chances of having a hit.

They say the heart of Rock & Roll is still beating, which is amazing if you consider all the blow it's done over the years.

"The Internet enables pompous blowhards to interact with other pompous blowhards in a big circle jerk of pomposity." - Bill Maher

"The negative aspects of this business, not only will continue to prevail, but will continue to accelerate in madness. Conditions aren't going to get better, because the economics of rock and roll are getting closer and closer to the economics of Big Business America." - Bill Graham

this is perpetuated a lot too>>>

"...Mastering engineers are quite secretive about their EQ settings as they dont want the competition to find out!..."

This is perpetuated by studios like Sterling who say that their mastering setting are proprietary and can not be given out. (my paraphrase).
