Now I have a Joe Meek compressor....
« on: July 01, 2011, 04:26:52 AM »

I thought it was interesting to see some videos......

A real maverick.

It is a very good optical compressor and has a sound I really like. I have always found
optical units seem a bit "wallowy". But this is flexible even without a side chain as it can be super transparent or grab like a VCA. It's not for everything as it's a shade fat and dark. If I find this is limiting in due course I will open it and mod it. Nice to have something that is built in the UK for change.

Ditto!
It’s an easy unit for a variety of applications, apart from just a stereo or mono compressor.
I use to use it on my guitars all the time, even drums and overheads. Not so appealing on the vocals, or grand piano, I thought. It can get mushy..

As a stereo bus compression or mastering agent, it needs constant tweaking though, as it changes its colour from track to track, unlike, what I felt with the Maslec stuff, always in the ballpark apart from a notch here and there etc.. and NO, Ted Fletcher’s tfpro, does not sound like the JM too much. I much preferred the JM for 2Bus or individual track jobbies than constant mastering. But, used in subtle ways, it lends towards mastering no problem..

My two quartz. You enjoy that comp mate ..

I am indeed enjoying it, thanks Kayo. It is simple to use and I am finding slope 4/5 my favourite setting with appropriate A/R settings. The only other optical compresors I have interest in is the
Avalon 747 and the Pendulum.

Well, you seem to be stacked with the very best of optics out there, Bazza.
By the way, do you use the graphic EQ on that Avalon a lot? And, how useful has it been?

Cheers,

Ted Fletcher just released a new upgrade of the compressor that retains all of the sound of the older ones, but adds more features and better fidelity.   http://www.tfpro.com/p38v7-ultimate-compressor.html  Plus Ted is a gentleman and a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to talk about electronics.  Great stuff.

He comes across as a nice man and his response to my initial issues with the unit was like a lightning bolt and he was on the other side of the planet as well, fixed and back within within 5 days. 3 of which he was not even at the plant.

I like how it sounds just as it is.
