SM81 cleaning
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:44:41 AM »

Hi,

I have an  SM81 mic. The blue foam from the protective case disintegrated and has found its way in through the front grille of the mic while it was sitting in the case. The audio performance is not what it should be. Weak and noisy.
Can anyone tell me how to remove the capsule from the body without damaging it, so I can gently clean away the foreign material, or how to remove the front grille to gain access to the diaphragm?

Any tips appreciated.

My first post here.

Atleast on the older ones, the capsule just screws off the body.  Once it's off the body it's pretty easy to figure out how to disassemble the capsule assembly.

Yes the capsule just screwed off the body but that's as far as I got. What I need to know is how to access the front of the insert, either by removing the front grille or removing the insert from the housing completely. Thanks,

Tim
