I just got a call from a friend who is recording a choir and he wants to get a pair of AKG C-4000's He asked me what I thought of them. I never used the 4000. I have used the 1000 once ( and never again ). Anyone have any hands-on with the 4000. Any recomendations for a cost equivelent mic other than the 4000 that would be good for choir ?

Can't comment directly.

I've never used one either.

I was afraid that it might be four times the mic that the 1000 is.

Don't do it!! I Have a Pair of them, they are unusable for Choir or Vocals, they seem to me to be the worst buy I ever made after I listened to my Vocalrecordings made with them Years ago. Today we use to record the room of drumrecordings. They have very few highs, but a clean, strong bass, i record also Contrabass withit, but never Vocals.
I used C-1000 Years ago and I never liked them on Choir.
If I would record Choir today, i would try my new Audix SCX or Neumann KM 184.
