Zeus Audio Systems - bass boost
« on: July 15, 2006, 06:23:24 PM »

So I went to a thing called The City-Wide Garage Sale -- bassically a bunch of vendors in a convention-hall like setting, all selling there varieties of crap/shit/cool stuff (all depends on where you're at).

One guy had a mic (bad, old, AT stage piece: junked) and next to it was this weird little thing. A cylinder, about as big around as your thumb & forefinger make for the OK symbol, and about 4 inches long. Black, metal, with a 1/4" jack on each end. There is a brown, beige, and very 70's label on it that says, "Zeus Audio Systems, Bass Boost model 8317 HI Z" and points out which jack is the IN and the OUT.

The seller didn't know what it was, but thought it went between an instrument and an amp.

As it was going for the incredible price of two dollars, I bought it.

Anyone know what the hell this is?

M

Yes, of course I'll let you know what it sounds like as soon as I get a chance.

Yeah, holy shit, not only did it pass signal, it just what it said - bass boost.

I a/b'd it in-line between my Jazz bass and B-15, with and w/o this thingy, and the sound was significantly louder and with a nice bump in the low end. Nothing crazy, EQ-wise, but noticible. Kinda like a Sadowsky or Aguilar outboard pre, but with no knobs.

I'll get a picture of it up tomorrow. It's freaky, but damned cool, and a nice little addition to my signal chain.

And for $2.

I forgot about those little red amps.  I had a friend with one of those who put it in a drawer with a mic on it and for his 3340 4 track demos, it sounded good enough.

An update to an old topic.

I was doing a session yesterday. I put flat wounds on my '65 Jazz and headed out. On the way I grabbed my little Zeus Bass Boost, you know, just cuz.

I fucking floored the engineer.

We tried a few different volume/tone settings, and with & without the boost, but the boost always won out. Crazy. He's stoked because he likes it, but bummed that he can't get one.

Best $1.99 I ever spent.
