Audio Technica 4060 tube mic
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:15:15 PM »

I have one of these, unfortunately it can't hold a candle to my 47, or 67, but it is still a useful mic. Anyone here have an opinion on these, or suggestions for making it a better sounding, more useful mic---

Not a fan, and I don't know that modding these to try to get them to sound better isn't akin to putting Porsche wheels on a VW Beetle.

AT 4060 is a real condenser or a electret capsule?

The spec is that it is a real condenser--although i've never investigated.

I wound up with one of these several years ago, but it is overshadowed by my other mics.  4060s not exactly cheap, and I'd like to use it if it can be led to compete in some way w/ the rest of the cabinet- any suggestions outside of turning it into $ would be appreciated---

I have two of them and, stock from the factory, I find them to be a bit murky.  Uses a Sovtek 6922 tube.  I've used NOS Sylvania Gold Brand, JAN, and new JJ tubes with good results.  The best is the NOS Sylvania, with the JJ coming in a close second.  All three sound so much better than the Sovtek tube.  If the tube didn't make that much of a difference I wouldn't have bought the second one.

When the 4060 was introduced, I spent some time listening to it. This has been years, mind you, but I remember certain impressions I had at the time. I felt that the sound was a bit "grainy", that the noise floor was a bit high, and that it was not a flattering timbre overall. However, It seemed to me that for certain sources, it would probably shine. All-mahogany acoustic guitars come to mind... the added grain/brightness might add something nice. Certain voices would probably also sound good on this mic.

Since I worked for a competitor at the time, I also observed that they couldn't seem to give those things away. There were numerous promos, price drops, etc. in order to move through them.

In theory, theory and practice should be the same. In practice, they are not.

Hi Jim, thx for the reply--was the hf rolloff attributable to the electronics, tube, or cap?

Capsule. IIRC, it's the same as in the 4050 mic. It is easily seen on their published frequency response plots. At least they are honest enough to supply those. Many do not.
