Group mixing similar to WOMP
« on: June 30, 2006, 03:47:46 PM »

Hi guys.

I thought this would be the appropriate forum to post.

Is anyone interested in regularly say once a month is participating in a group mixing learning type experience.

Basically we find some tracks for a song and a few of us here on the forum mix it and we compare and discuss so we can learn from it.

Also on a 2nd note.

Instead of group mixing and group mastering is anyone interested in individual tracks being uploaded, say a vocal and we all download the vocal and make it as huge or as classy as we can.

I would like to be involved in such things and i thought id air my thoughts.

Learning by doing.

Ive learnt quite a bit from participating in such ventures.

Cheers

that sounds fine to me.  the idea needs some more specifics added, but i'd be willing to participate.

i might be able to supply some tracks as well.

as for taking a vocal and making it sound killer on it's own.   i'm less thrilled about that, since it doesn't hold a lot of weight unless you have music around it forcing you to balance it and make it fit.

with out a wall of guitar, the vocal won't have to be as compressed, or perhaps as bright.  thus making the lesson a false sense of reality and teaching people things that are not necessarily correct.

Great idea, but be sure you have a server with HUGE bandwidth to transmit the files...

good idea

once a month is a little ambitious, imo

just see how long the first one takes

i reckon, a mix-off where everyone gets the same tracks and a deadline

i'd be in that

another possibility is a production-off, where everyone gets the same song, and they have to produce their version

i'd be in that also

Cool.

For a moment i didnt think anyone was interested.

How should we start guys.

J.Hall.

I agree with you about the vocal not fitting in with the context of the mix but i still thought it could be worth while in regards to finding the boundaries and the dos and donts of the processing of the individual elements so to speak.
Finding what makes them shine and what doesn't.
But i suppose just from participating in the mixing experience and reading what others did to the instruments will be adequate.

as j says, isolating the elements is a bit pointless, seeing as nobody mixes that way.... right?!

however seeing how different people would approach the same mix is very interesting

and seeing what processing is applied to the individual tracks would also be very informative

practically, as brad suggests, we need a server with some bandwidth

i suggest we put up 8 or so tracks (i have some left over from my record, but any will do) on this server

then, people have two weeks to upload their mixes with the description of the chains (the more documentation, the merrier, imo)

then we have a yabfest and some people take their toys and leave in a huff

then we do it again

Sounds Good.
Definitely the more documentation the better.
I think full disclosure is a must.

Yes Yes Yes! I like this idea a lot...

I'd especially like it if the group would tackle one of my tunes.... heh...   had a terrible time mixing this thing. I don't think the raw tracks are all that bad, but somehow I had a hellish time making the mix sound balanced.

By that i mean, letting everyone know what you did to each instrument WRT processing.

Verbs used delays etc
2 buss processing if any.....

Im not trying to make any rules just throwing suggestions to try to make this thing a learning experience for everyone.

I'd be happy to take part in this in whatever way y'all see fit.

I have some old material that would be a challenge to draw a mix from. We don't want it to be too easy do we?
