My suggestion is to hook up a tone (or some signal source) to a pair of wires.  The hottest colors Red and Green (although you wouldn't think of green as hot)would be the signal, with white being ground.  Connect directly to one set of wires, whatever pair gives you the left channel, that is the tip and the ground.  What ever gives you the right channel is the ring and the ground.

Thanks for the reply Barry. We got it sorted -0 it was as we thought white = earth , red/green = left/right
