WUMP IV - Jeeezuz!!!
« on: June 11, 2006, 09:18:12 PM »

Ok so maybe a touch too soon,

but why wait?

you can still post any info / comments on WUMP III threads.

If Steve could maybe upload a WAV of Dog Days that would be cool.

If not, i will upload the Superb live Jazz track - "Rugged Cross"

Courtesy of OTR ( if thats cool man?)

Let's go acoustic!

So who's in???

Two thoughts come to mind:
1] if you do these too often, people will get burned out and WUMP will die. It's probably a good idea to set up a schedule, maybe the first of every month or the first and the fifteenth of every month (if you want to do two/month), so even if people aren't here every day they'll know when the next one starts.
2] if people aren't taking the constructive criticisms to heart and further examining their work, but instead getting their feelings hurt and spending time being defensive, they may as well not participate in the first place. This is a learning experience for the participants, if you go into it thinking otherwise, you're missing out...

Just some thoughts.

Good points Brad,

on point 2 though - I think I'm on the same wavelength (no pun!)

I hope i don't come across as being hurt of anything from folks comments.
Perhaps you mean others?

Anyway, lets say this will be the last one till July?

And where the heck you been?
ain't been posting much recently...

snowed under with mixes  i imagine...

cheers,
Ged.

No, not directed at anyone in particular. In fact, it was an earlier post by you that made me realize some were taking the criticisms to heart and becoming defensive rather than examining the other engineer's thoughts and figuring out if they had merit...

Been extremely busy, but also took a week off for vacation and spent the last four days travelling (tuning a mix room for a buddy).

Not enough time these days...

No problem - use it whenever you wish. BTW, I completely agree with Brad on creating a WuMP schedule. Makes it easier to know when you might be able to join in...

Sorry I haven't been able to play lately - its just been too busy around here (Thank God!). I'll try to jump back in again when I can.

Perhaps Jeff could interject here???

I imagine this one has to be as true to the source as possible.

Level is'nt the issue here imo, "sound" is.

i had a jazz guy come to me for a remaster asking for MORE level...

his release sounded too quiet on his local jazz radio station in comparison to the others.

i've always wondered what he was hearing

Gladly.

These performaces were captured for the purpose of producing radio shows so the number one issue here is to make the song radio-ready.  Hot is not the goal but a full, healthy sound is desired. As the tracking/mix engineer for these sessions, I went for an up close, almost in your face sound w/o letting the brass blast the ears. I wanted it to sound as as close to a studio recording as I could pull off in a live setting.

The recording was done in less than optimal conditions - control room had to be set up each week in a spare room in the church; monitoring was on Behringer Truth active monitors; horns were submixed thru a Mackie 1604 VLZ into a stereo channel of an A&H GL2200; all other instruments were input into the GL, routed to the stereo buss and captured on DAT. The entire performance was mixed on-the-fly. Only post work was to edit out bad songs/takes, edit material to fit the program specs and do the mastering.

Many of the players were sight-reading the material for the first time each week and had only 1 practice run-through of each week's material a couple of hours before show-time.

Just do the best you can with it. I'm really curious to see what you guys come up with...

Good luck!

What's the deadline for this?  And are we submitting at the same time like suggested?  It would be kind of difficult for everyone to submit their entries at the same time don't you think?
