I believe the BX5 was a rack mount unit.

That's sounds about right. I believe the BX-10 was a Tolex covered box about 18"x18"x22".
You folks remember the MicMix units? They were my step up from the Fishers. They wouldn't admit that they were springs but it was quite obvious when you thumped your knuckles on the gold tube. Those puppies were about $2200 for a stereo set. Don't miss the days of springs at all.

The Master Room spring was pretty stanky. The Publison "Infernal Machine" had few good settings, But I never got it.. Early Sony and Yamaha reverbs..don't bother.  QRS sounded edgy.  The Cunningham EcoPlate also stunk.

That description fits the BX20. If it was about 16"'x16"x40"tall that was probably it. It was their best spring unit. They had smaller ones, BX10 and BX5, I believe.

Weren't the BXes some kind of "torsion bar" reverb, not springs?

Hey, although I don't use them that often, I have two <Great British Spring> units that I really like.

Actually, the thing with springs, or ANY mechanical-basis verb, is that is has LOTS of character. Which can work well now, but you don't want to have to rely on them as your main source of reverb.

Ah, my very first session, we had both Sound Workshops spring unit and an Ursa Major (I know people love them, but not that good really). Instead, I set up two mics in a nearby stairwell as chamber and got stereo reverb that was 10x better than the project itself...

I still use the Sound Workshops now and then... but I modded it.

Going the opposite direction, the most clever idea I ever read about for reverberation was actually for an echo chamber.

As you know an echo chamber can eat up a lot of space, so someone devised a cube, filled not with air but with another gas.  The speed of sound through this gas was much slower than through air.  This allowed the cube to seem bigger than it actually was.  So it had the sound of a much larger space.  All other elements of the chamber were the same: reflective surfaces, speaker, baffle to prevent direct sound reaching the mics, and of course the mics themselves.

It was (is) a brilliant idea.  So why didn't it work?  If I remember correctly, the gas had a severely deteriorating effect on rubber.

i had my bx20 electronics rebuilt by allen garren in portland OR ( alan@waltzingbear.com) a few years ago.  it sounds fantastic, and sits really well in the mix.  he did a really thorough job and his rate was reasonable.
this box is as close to an emt as i've used.  often i put a compressor on the send to help keep the boing down on percussion.

Bow down to....
Echo Mic!index.php/fa/2937/0/

The echo mic rules!!  My mother has one of those for the grand kids.  Every time I run accross that thing when I visit, I dream of swiping it and using it on a record.

Add the Ursa Major 8X32 to the list.

Probably the one I had to build in SynC.

Respect to anyone who has the skills to create a good-sounding reverb program from scratch.
