Different attack for L&R on a compressor?
« on: June 02, 2006, 05:51:24 PM »

Hi,
If this has been discussed already, please let know where I can find it (I tried the search engine to no avail).

I just mastered my own song which was sounding good. However, I went back to the mix to fix some little things here and there and when I got back to my mastering chain, I realised that my Manley had the left attack at 90

Are there any real danger in doing this? (phase issues etc...)

It's a bit odd, but certainly no phase issues or other problems are created.  Does it sound weird in headphones?

To my ears, it sounds ok in headphones.

... is this a common way to work with compressors on mixes?

Is the content of each channel very different? ...like Beatles' Revolver?

I would think it's OK to have slightly different attack times for L&R.

But if one channels' attack is "fast" & the other is "slow" the controlled transients on one side might tilt the stereo image to the other side, due to the ears' localization.

But I suppose it depends on the content of the mix, and how hard you compress.

I'm doing between 1 to 2db of compression.
I would not say that the Left and Right channels are VERY different but most sounds are just panned across the spectrum.

While checking the VariMU book, I found these infos:

Med =50mS, Fast =25mS (Left ch. is on Med and Right ch. is between Med and Fast)

And also:
When switched to "SEP" left side is independent from the right side. When switched to "LINK" both channels are reduced in gain by the same number of dB. This insures that the stereo image is unchanged. The METERs remain independent to help set THRESHOLDs.

Now, I'm wondering how different attack times technically affect centered sounds like the lead vocal, kick and bass.
