Drums taking over !!!
« on: June 02, 2006, 02:18:11 PM »

Ok so we have been working on our drum sound/micing and I really like what were getting ( big Bonham sound fat kick etc, )
Micing
ovrhds: Gefell Um70's , spaced pair
Kick : Beta 52 @ the hole
Snr : Sm57
Mid tom : 421
floor toms : D112
Room : 414buls

The room is not very big but seems to work ok !! ( I'm using the room sparingly )
The problem is that the drums just overtake everything and I'm having problems finding room for the other instruments , I have tried subbing them and crushing them with comps = so-so , any suggestions J ??? and others

PS: this is a new drummer and he hits HARD !!! but has excellent timing and feel

the brutality the drummer lays upon his kit will have little to do with the levels you chose to mix the sounds at, it has everything to do with the tone he is getting out of the kit.

i hit really hard for a reason.

cliff from the flaming lips is an long time resident of the local scene here before he joined up with them and moved.  i do believe cliff's drums shudder in fear when he sits down behind them.

anyway.

if you are working with big open sounds you have to keep an eye on the low end, and the low mids.  often times this is where your mix will bog down.

a real roomy sounding drum kit can often times feel a lot weaker in the low end then it really is.  first take a look at that.

i'd say throwing compression at it isn't the answer.

you also need to tailor the other sounds around it.

i'm not sure i'd cut a real modern sounding guitar tone (mesa dual rectal-frier) to match up with big open drum sounds.

can you make a 30 second mp3?  it's easier to make suggestions when i have something to listen to.

good sounds.

suck some low mids out of the kick drum, and a tiny bit out of the rooms and you should be good to go.

Thanks J , I was thinking of trying a stereo comp just to glue the drums into the mix , I will work on the bottom end a bit to clean it up.

Sounds good both ways Buzz--

Just for grins-- you could also try using your room mic as a reverb send, that can be interesting too some times.

Nice sounds...   really nice room.   Try what rattleyour suggested.   I've had very good luck with that approach before as well.

Just out of curiosity, what kinds of drums and cymbals are being captured here?   The hats are really mellow - in a cool way.   I like what you've got here.

Good luck and thanks for sharing.

i think your tracks sound fine.  ya, like jay said, a little tubby on the bottom, but it seems like the tracks should not be a problem.  maybe the drums are not the problem.

peace,

I'll give a try to what Rattle said ( BTW he's a friend of my daughter !!! WTF really small world huh ??? ) the drums are a Yamaha set with a good drummer Sean Siner ( did a bunch of work in Seattle ) the room is my spare bedroom in my house ( carpeted floor etc. with some foam on the walls 15x15 )
So I guess I'm happy with the results !!!!
