DBX163X Mod
« on: May 10, 2006, 04:16:14 PM »

I remember seeing something about a DBX163X mod on some studio equipment page a while ago, and I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about it.

I don't know if there are different versions of these things, but I bought a 163X and a 463X in the late eighties and I never really got much use out of them. If the sound could be improved (relatively cheaply) with a modification, I might consider bringing them out of retirement.

Has anyone heard of this mod, or heard a modified unit?

Thanks.

Well I found this off Google, but I am a little skeptical...

DBX 163X Compressors (2) (Modified by Audio Upgrades, Hollywood - Sound and react just like SSL compressors. You've got to hear them!)

This specific mod isn't listed on the Audio Upgrades site though.

I guess I'll send them an email, but I would like to hear from anyone that has heard a modified unit and whether or not it is worth doing.

The only Mod I would do to mine would be making them a bit quieter. I like the compression action a lot for some stuff. My only complaint is noise.

Thanks Chance...interesting forum.

I found a schematic for it on there, which might come in handy if I ever get into doing my own mods, but I've never had them time to  develop my skills in that area. Maybe this would be a good project to start with if it is a simple enough mod.

In case anyone else has one of these and is interested, here is the info I got from Jim Williams at Audio Upgrades.

Quote:

I've done around 50 of those so far. They are known as the poor man's SSL comp. I rebuild the power supply and use very fast TI THS opamps. MIT caps are also used. Cost is $150 and takes about a week to do.

Thanks, Jim Williams

The LF353 is the only opamp that is in the audio path.  Just replace it with something with an equivalent slewrate (13V) that is quieter, like the Burr-Brown OPA dual opamps of the day, etc.  The 5534 output driver shouldn't affect how quiet the circuit is.
