Look ahead delay question!
« on: May 19, 2006, 08:26:51 PM »

Wow, what an intersting question! (I hear you say - Not!)

Anyway,
One of the plugs i'm using (final master) has a "look ahead delay" now my understanding through reading etc is that the control actually delays the audio in the plug so it can act faster on peaks.

But, the control has a delay slider, from 0.1ms to 50ms
So, should it be set to 0.1ms for the fastest reaction time or have i got it the wrong way round???

reason for this is i'm trying to catch some nasty vox spikes in the  upper mids....ouch, my ears!

thanks in advance guys

Ged.

you can try these test files:

http://members.chello.at/hmp_web/1764HzSawX0,5HzStairs.wav
http://members.chello.at/hmp_web/600HzSquareX1HzTriangle.wav
(done by me, de-gibbed)

they will reveal a lot about the timing behavioro of a compressor, and you will see what the parameters are doing (won't show everything but you'll see the picture and sure can create more signals for different tests)

lookahead limiting is an old hat, but HOW they make sense of the two informations (current and delayed signals) has room for some nifty algorithms.

Thanks Hans for the tests files...

But still,
I don't know what setting i should set the look ahead delay to for the "Fastest" reaction time?

cheers Hans...

I didnt want to sound nerdy, but the testfiles (or better ones) are the only thing that can tell you about the true reactions of the gadget.
there is no minimal time, for some material you would be too early, for other too late.
I think it is meant that the higher settings would make the reaction of the limiter come earlier.
it depende fully on the purpose. do you want a slow attack for hot drum transients, then you can't compensate too much with the lookahead.
the test file with the stairs can help you to find the compensational zero points for various attack times. from that you can vary in both directions, as you think the source needs.
perhaps it tunes the delay for fitting different attack times by itself, but this could be confusing.
