8mm data tape master
« on: April 30, 2011, 07:19:11 PM »

Was awaiting an older master coming on a DAT for lacquer cut. Today arrives an 8mm tape (2.5 gig) that I have only seen used for backups.

What are my options here? Finding a 8mm playback machine with spdf outs????

That sounds like it could be an Exabyte with a DDP master on it - any clues on the label?

If so, you'll need someone with an Exabyte drive on a workstation that can read DDPs, perhaps an older SADiE setup. I used to turn Exabyte DDPs out regularly from the mid-90s, but stopped about five years ago when DDPi on DVD became more widely accepted by the plants.

FWIW, my older SADiE 5 with Exabyte is now in the possession of a London-based mastering facility: if all else fails I could put you in touch with them, but I realise that geography is likely to rule this out!

Yah, could be Exabyte, could be something else (DA88, etc) - you'll need to fid out what format it is and go from there. Hopefully it's not a 24 bit master from a DA88 using a Prism MR-2024T Bit Splitter or similar...

I don't remember DTRS cartridges for TASCAM-style machines like the DA88, DA78 etc. being described in terms of data carried as you describe, Dietrich, but more usually by run time (30, 60 and so on). Exabyte cartridges and other backup media were, IIRC, usually identified by data capacity, but I'm afraid it's a while since I had contact with either.

That's good to hear - yes, the '112' part (112 metres) certainly sounds familiar -

- the Amazon description only says 'for helical scan drives' but I suspect they're just being coy, perhaps because Exabyte is a trademark.

All the best with the LC guys, I'm sure they'll get you sorted :-)

Ok....LC does not have the 2003 system any more...

anyone have
Exabyte... an old DDP.
It was probably output from the Sonic System we had or the Sadie.

Ask them if they have a CD. It's the same thing.

Yes, a pressed CD of the project will do just as well - a couple of copies still in the shrinkwrap would be nice!

If you draw a blank with that then I would guess Glenn Meadows, now at Mayfield Mastering, could probably transfer an Exabyte DDP if required.

Hi Dietrich, We can also help you with Exabyte if it's DDP.   If it's a Dantz Retrospect archive, perhaps not...
