Weird Vintage Limiter
« on: May 05, 2006, 10:34:40 pm »

Hi, I posted this on the Tapeop forums. I'm posting here too, as Fletcher and the people who view this board have used a wide range of audio gear. Perhaps one of you will know about this thing:

I spotted an 80's stereo limiter on-line, and grabbed it (for 50 bucks) because I had never heard of it.

It's called an ADS PL5000s Limiter. ADS stands for Analog Digital Systems.

The seller said he didn't know much about it, other than they were made in Florida in the 80's, and a handful of them were sold in Memphis.

The unit was shopped around Memphis by a dealer who also sold Altec, Ampex and Electrodyne equipment.

What it looks like: Silver face with with 80's computer like text. One knob on for each channel for input level, and an in/out switch for the box. Also, each channel has 2 leds (1 is listed as "normal", other is "limit").

The thing is obviously a small production unit (The guy said it was made by a start up company)... the power cable is 3 prong, but the ground prong has been cut away to the base. Also, serial number on this unit is #1 (The other one the guy had was #2).

So, does anyone know anything about this unit?

Thanks

Are the 1980's "vintage" already?! I felt old when the 80's became "retro"!

Stuff from the 70's durring the 90's was considered vintage. It's been 16 years since then, so unless 80's is a special case decade and doesnt age like the others... Laughing

Late 80's doesnt apply... too close to the 90's

But yeah, I think this comes up to personal taste right now.

Wow!!  Cool find.

I think I remember seeing some of those in the late 70's mostly in "reinforcement" use... but it's been a lot of miles since then and I really can't be sure.
