...Smart level detectors/adjustors are going to become ubiquitous in consumer products...
They already are.

The problem is that it doesn't work. People have been trying to automate program level setting for 50 years. You can hear the results of throwing millions of dollars worth of research at this on any radio or TV station because board operators are expensive.

Theres only so loud you can go before music becomes unintelligible, so I wouldn't worry about the "loudness wars" becoming a permanent trend. Once everything thats released is super loud, people will start gravitating for quality music that doesn't kill your brain after listening to it for 5 minutes... Dynamic range will become the fresh alternative, and will thrive again.

This type of trend is evident in all industries, so history will repeat itself.

Amen Bro.

Some buddies of mine are in the progress of starting up a recordlabel which philosophy is to back off from everything loud. The latest thing I heard from those fellows was that there was no probs getting a loan at the bank when they described their business philosophy.

I'm excited since they are going to release pop.

I think I'll tip them about Ammitsboel.

...then what are they going to start to latch onto as a trait with (sic) makes a recording sound better? What is it that record companies are going to be returning cds to us, saying "it's not as X as the latest number one"?

How about "good?"

yea, it's all just "subjective"

maybe we ought to start a thread of common music biz excuses for mediocrity.

selling records for the majors has become a lot like like selling fish sticks as you were saying or ice cream..

very supermarket-like.. pumped with sugar, salt and flavour enhancers.

in the end the kinds of foods that work best with the above substances HAVE to be relatively poor in substance and flavour to taste right..

It's also easier and profitable for corporations with a lot of money at their disposition to enter and take over a market with ice cream and fish sticks than it is to take over a market for 'gourmet' food.

They just walked into the bank with a boombox, a few CD's and into a room where a discussion took place. And then they walked out from the bank with a boombox, a few CD's and some have-to-be-paid-back-money.

I suppose it would be just as easy anywhere.
