Tape-Op here.

Yup - same here.  In fact it's the only one I read on a regular basis.   Why?  Because it focuses on the people instead of the gear.

For reviews Sound On Sound can be pretty decent though.  If I want to know who played in the NARAS Golf Tournament I go to Mix.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

in this order and why:

1. Tape Op -street level info about the real world.

2. EQ -practical info & glossy infomercials on Separation Mastering!

3. Mix -Industry news and Session News with pics in the back.

4. Electronic Musician - occasional good mastering feature ~ Greg Calbi.

I let 'em sit around the studio for one year max and then toss or recycle.

My favorite pro-audio mags are the ones I don't get.

Sound on Sound magazine. Not only do they give reviews, but there are interviews with pro engineers, tutorial on DAW's, Q&A, and tips on improving recordings....people send CD's of ther recordings.  SOS listens to them and then give advise on how to improve them. WE are able to hear the before and after on line. Also have DVD's quarterly that have cool things like going to Rode in Australia and seeing how they make thier mikes, so going to a project studio and showing the before and after.

I have made a conscious effort to drastically reduce all magazines I receive either pro audio or otherwise.  I really enjoy Tape Op for its connection with the working musician- otherwise I've eliminated them one by one from my mailbox.  I live next to a clearcut ...

I would actually be willing to subscribe (pay for)  to an on-line pro audio magazine that just offered articles - forget the paper and ink costs.  Just give me information that wasn't edited with the advertising director looking over the authors shoulder.

When I was working in replication One to One became a favorite of mine-

Seeing as Tape-Op isn't exactly common in the UK, it has to be Resolution hands-down IMHO.

Their site warrants a browse as they have a few sample articles online, this one for example: Vinyl - Still at the Cutting Edge

Another one: Who's this Joker? Never heard of him Smile

Resolution is what became of "Studio Sound" btw.

Another vote for "Resolution"

Except for it and "Tape Op," all the other rags go straight
to the garbage after a 10 minute scan.

Yes, Resolution is good.

wow, gear reviews that I enjoy reading.

Due to the subjective nature of audio equipment, I usually completely ignore equipment reviews.

I like some of these, though.

Isn't that a catch-22 though if you want to get your favorites? Smile
