I just updated My Trend Micro(Let it lapse in July of 2005). It's a monstrosity, but it's OK...
Other than TMIS's firewall, I really don't use my VP(Most of it is turned off) AND I "surf where I want" - if you get my drift? I have had one "infection"(Of no consequence) in the last several years, which I removed manually... Why? I can blame it on knowing which buttons not to push and when to dump-out of a website. Most of the "bad" sites have nothing to do with "porno", perse, only with greed. Matter of actual fact, I've picked up(From the site owners!) several worthwhile "tips" and instructions on how to avoid malware problems ON/FROM porno sites(There are good and bad things of every description... Your job? To know which is which.).
Delete(Without opening) any email you aren't sure about, or just plain don't need to open. Don't install "stuff"... Set WINDOWS OWN security settings properly(You really don't need anything else - despite the hooey about MS, they supply all the options for the price of admission.). I also manually delete unwanted cookies and check other known problem areas on the machine, manually, at least once every day. Every so often I run a HiJackThis log or a Startup log or CW Shredder, Adaware, SpyBot, whatever - but, they never find a thing, because I give them nothing to find...
What causes the most malware problems?
1. Itchy fingers...
2. Believing there are "things" that will protect you, automatically, with no knowledge needed from the operator.
