Is this U47 for real?
« on: May 09, 2011, 02:27:56 PM »

I just spotted this U47 on ebay. The seller has lots of positive feedback, but the VF14 tube looks kinda funny... The text "VF14" should be stamped on, not "painted"? What do you think?

It actually does look stamped to me.

It just seems that they had a little too much 'ink' on the stamp pad that day at the factory  :o

But, maybe I'm wrong and it is painted on there...

I'm not sure, check out the ones Gunter Wagner says are fakes, compared to the ebay picture (mic-hawk).

Hmm.  I will say that the 'Telefunken' badge does appear to be stamped on the VF14 in question.

I am less sure about the 'VF14' part, but am inclined to think that it was, in fact, stamped.  But Klaus sees a lot more of these than I do... so I'd defer to him.

My concern is whether or not the seller can test the mic, as it does not have the cable and PSU.  If you really want the mic, have the seller take a picture with a resistance meter across the grid pins on the tube.

I'm suspicious of any mic like this without the supply and cable..measuring the grids with an ohmmeter will give you zero indication of anything about the quality of the tube...

But at least it will tell you whether it IS a VF14, and whether the heater is still functioning!
For further details, see also an extended discussion on how to detect the fake ones in the PSW forum archive of the Mic Lab.

Just wondering if you ever found out if this was real or a fake?

I am looking into possibly purchasing a U47 myself, after using a U87 as a male vocal mic for the most part.

"VF14" paint stamps on top of these tubes had all kinds of outlines- from sharply delineated to blurred potato stamp, like the one in the eBay auction picture referred to in the opening post.

Once you have seen enough of them, you get a mosaik in your head of what falls inside the probability range and which ones raise a flag. Those that raise a flag can then be investigated further.
