Barkmarket
« on: April 14, 2006, 12:10:38 PM »

i just recently picked up "L Ron" and "Gimmick" from my old days of liking this band but never owning their stuff.

good grief L Ron is SOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOD.

it's easily the beginning of Dave Sardy's "sound"  i love his mixes and his overall aesthetic.

Nothing very informative to add but.... I too am a fan of the band and Dave Sardy's production (especially the FAR - Water and Solutions record). I saw a pic of one of Sardy's racks and all I can say is that the man loves him some compression.

you don't need to see his rack to hear the HEAPING LOADS OF COMPRESSION the man uses on his mixes.

a singer takes a breathe of air and it's louder then when he sings...........the weird part is, you love it.

he just knows how to make a mix sound angry at itself.

L Ron turned me onto a whole new thing... I simply love that record. I don't know Dave, but I've heard he's an excellent producer and really pounds the snot out of his performers.

After seeing some photos of a Sardy recording setup, I trid a sm7 on hats...never though to do that before...sounds great!!

El Ron is a really cool record...hardly any lowend, but it doesn't matter for some reason...

Oh, if only my feeble brain would provide me with that information.
I can't quite recall.

However, I do seem to vaguely remember that he recorded a Bush record, and there were quite a few pics in the booklet...

I could be totally making this up, though. Bits and pieces of my record shop days floating around in the ol' head tend to get a little jumbled.

Worth a shot, anyway.

Sorry!

just streamed most of 'l. ron' on this here internet..

this stuff is really cool. it's like a super-pissed, macho Quicksand. i love the first take quality of the guitars and that's something i try to acheive in my own work. i'm surprised i've never heard of this before now.

cool! (well, except for distorted vocals, sooo '90s..)

nobody makes a Fender Twin and a Strat sound like Dave Sardy does. saw Barkmarket in Baltimore in '97. the most intense trio i've ever seen.

Speaking of Unsane... I was actually turned on to them, by Joel Hamilton, just last year and I have to say the 2 records I've heard are awesome. Blood Run is very cool and apparently (per Joel) there was no eq used in tracking OR mixdown... just mic placement and a ton of compression, definitely worth a listen.

The Barkmarket record "Vegas Throat" is still one of my faves of all time. It ran congruent to my first experimentation w/ the left handed cigs in high school.

It was the first time I heard a record where I identified the production as just an important part of the record's sound as the songs. I loved the fact that the breaths were louder than the actual vocals and there are lots of them. Talk about stream of consciousness!

Dave Sardy is a big hero of mine.
