I have a guy that I can hook you up with as well.  He works out of St. Louis and Nashville.  I was talking to him thursday night about the same thing.

give me a yell if you would like his contact info.

For what it's worth...

I have three guys here who are amazing and extremely reasonable.   One of them is a pretty reputable 'name' if that matters any.   What kind of style/work are you looking for???

Oh, so that's why you hated it when the drums got kicked over in the song.
I didn't realise your a drummer.  ( cool)

The music is along the lines of

FLoyd, Fleetwood mac, with a touch of blues/funk/rock.

I just found out there  are some awesome drummers here in Perth.

I don't know weather to get them to do it as i can be there when they do so, and i can approve or disapprove of how they are going to approach the song. (Do you guys think it is best to be there for the session)

I need to find a regular guy, cause i ain't gonna stuff around any longer with samples.

Then there is this place   http://www.esession.com/site/

some highly respected dudes their with big credits.

I don't mind paying for a top notch guy.

Wont be for a month or 2 though.

I'm starting to look into this also. If you do a search online you will begin stumbling on to some amazing session drummers that, IMO, are almost giving their talent away. I have not tried this yet, but seriously thinking about going back and re-doing every drum track I've programmed as well as using these services in the future.
I think if you give a great drummer a reasonable facsimile of your idea, he's gonna nail it for you pretty quickly.

I'm sure everyone who posted here would be excellent, but there is that extra dimension of control and satisfaction if you are present.

But then, you may find a better result if a super-pro remotely does the track to your specs, too.

just one word of caution... always ask for a demo of the SOUND they get from their studio..  Maybe just a one or two bar rough mix...

Most of these amazing drummers that offer this service are great drummers, but not engineers.  Every track I've mixed with amazing (some are well known) drummers playing in their home studio has been a very poor recording.  So you're left with a phenomenal performance, but poorly recorded tracks.  It turns out to be more work than its worth because you have to sound replace a lot and even then you still can't get rid of that "home garage" sound.  If that's the sound you're after, then great!  But, I would definitely ask for a sample (make sure its a mix of the raw tracks and not a finished mix where someone has already replaced sounds and whatnot).

Even if you're going to use a guy in your area and you will be attending the session, get a demo of the sound first.  If they are recording it in their home studio you never know what you'll be walking into.

I just mixed a rock album... we tracked three of the drum tracks here in our studio (Megatrax) for one of the composers on the album.  A second composer turned in tracks that were using BFD, so we had the same drummer record the second composer's five songs, replacing the BFD tracks.  But!!! we had the drummer record it at his home studio instead of coming back in.  It's the same drummer, same drumset, and I mixed all the songs in the same studio with the same gear... when you hear the tracks the difference in the drum sound is quite noticeable.  The ones recorded in the studio sound better.  Maybe I'll post a link to the CD once its up on our website so you can hear for yourself.  We just got it mastered the other day, so it should be up there in a week or two.

Anyway... definitely get a demo of the "sound" the drummer gets in their home studio... cuz it may not be suitable for your purpose.

Good point...which I had considered also, being a newbie to any collaboration like this.
But ya, huge consideration. It would be hard to imagine a true session caliber player dumping bad recordings on folks if he really wanted to build a business though.
On the other hand...a mediocre recording of a great performance might work for me if it truly kicks my ideas up a notch or two!  Smile

You'd be surprised!!!  Most of these guys have already made a name for themselves as session drummers, so they don't have to worry about building a business.  Usually they offer it as an alternative to having them come in and record at a studio.  I have a feeling though, its the guys that aren't well known that will probably have a better sound and a better product overall, even.

I know in one instance, a friend of mine is building a studio in the back of his with the sole purpose of recording drums.  He hired a well-known studio designer to do the plans for this space, and he told the studio designer, "whatever we do, drums HAVE to sound good in there."  So... once his studio is up and running, he'll be able to record drum tracks for people and it will sound pretty good (I'm going to help him pick out mics and set everything up for him).

But, that's not to say that everyone does this.  Every other person I know of is using their garage and has some makeshift mic'ing setup.

So...that's why I say, make sure you get a demo of the sounds they record, not just their drumming skills.

And I can picture that also! There's no doubt in my mind there are a lot of great players who are totally qualified to get any given job done who may have missed the boat as far as becoming a household name. For me, it would boil down to getting samples of stuff, a scratch track of their input on a couple projects, then go from there. I've lost some chops over the years, but on the other hand, have been around the block enough times to have experienced first hand the physical toll that can manifest itself on drummers after a great career. That will always be a sad story for any of us. It's always been about a drummer who kicks my butt and understands meter and dynamics. And that would be any flavor of music you are attempting.

I'm a very solid drummer with solid engineer chops as well. I play drums and guitars for Blue Man Group here in Sin City.  I'd be happy to do a remote track for you, or hire one of the sick drummers I work with and engineer a remote recording for you (home studio).
There are enough drummer/engineers here to start a union ! (must be a joke in there somewhere)

Are you trying to program beats or are you playing with a V-drum?

I think if played and then just move the cybols and snares around here and there to change the tones, they sound great when played via midi. I do think they need more snares though. The BFD snares tend to sound to tight and boxy for all songs. I like a more loose and flammy or crunchy snare for electronic breaks. They are great on most rock and pop tracks though. I have only used the original and 8 bit kits. I need to check out the XL and jazz.

My buddy is a great drummer and could send you midi files played from his TD6. That way you can still change sounds and the mix,. If you've already tried this,I am sorry If I missed the point.

Wow.

That stuff sounds great.

You get a really good drum sound and you (as a drummer) kick ass.

If I were you, I would pursue doing this "online drums for hire" thing fulltime.

Hell, I'm so busy, I'll probably hire you.

Could you give some info on how you get such good drum tones?

Room? Mics? Pres? Compressors? etc.

Thanks

Very nice archtop.   I heard the stuff you posted a while back and it rocked.  Any info on your setup?
I'm gonna PM ya cuz I got a couple gigs for ya.  Same rate as you charged Benny, I assume?  I was looking for something along the lines of what you did for Irwin.  Check your PM's and get back at me

. . . . . A word of caution.  If you work for Kenny, don't bend down to adjust your kick drum mic. Have someone else do it.

There's a reason. No need to ask.  Just do as I say.

Hey, glad this thread popped back up...

Jesse Sprinkle is an amazing live and session drummer.   His credits include Poor Old Lu, Demon Hunter and he is currently touring with Dead Poetic.   His brother is Aaron Sprinkle of Tooth and Nail fame (also engineer on Pedro the Lion's 'Control').   Jesse does a lot of session work over at Aaron's studio in Seattle, The Compound.

Jesse lives nearby and has started doing session work here at Viking.   I want to get the word out about him because he is such an amazing player and his rates are extremely reasonable.   PM me if your interested and I can hook you up with him for any session drumming you might need.
