just one word of caution... always ask for a demo of the SOUND they get from their studio.. Maybe just a one or two bar rough mix...
Most of these amazing drummers that offer this service are great drummers, but not engineers. Every track I've mixed with amazing (some are well known) drummers playing in their home studio has been a very poor recording. So you're left with a phenomenal performance, but poorly recorded tracks. It turns out to be more work than its worth because you have to sound replace a lot and even then you still can't get rid of that "home garage" sound. If that's the sound you're after, then great! But, I would definitely ask for a sample (make sure its a mix of the raw tracks and not a finished mix where someone has already replaced sounds and whatnot).
Even if you're going to use a guy in your area and you will be attending the session, get a demo of the sound first. If they are recording it in their home studio you never know what you'll be walking into.
I just mixed a rock album... we tracked three of the drum tracks here in our studio (Megatrax) for one of the composers on the album. A second composer turned in tracks that were using BFD, so we had the same drummer record the second composer's five songs, replacing the BFD tracks. But!!! we had the drummer record it at his home studio instead of coming back in. It's the same drummer, same drumset, and I mixed all the songs in the same studio with the same gear... when you hear the tracks the difference in the drum sound is quite noticeable. The ones recorded in the studio sound better. Maybe I'll post a link to the CD once its up on our website so you can hear for yourself. We just got it mastered the other day, so it should be up there in a week or two.
Anyway... definitely get a demo of the "sound" the drummer gets in their home studio... cuz it may not be suitable for your purpose.
