Questions to OCL2 users
« on: January 08, 2007, 09:13:45 AM »

Hi folks.

I have just got my OCL2 and I have some questions...
a)At PRESET MODE, the unit provides "6 attack/release settings which are ideal for program compression. The presets are identical to those found on the classical Fairchild 670 limiter. The first 4 presets offer a selection of fixed attack and release times, with the release times indicated on the dial markings. Presets 5 and 6 are program ependet release times..."

a) I have never used a Fairchild, so.. which are the preset attack times on this four first presets?

b)I was wondering why do the inputs and outputs are 3 pin unbalanced? Are they trying to avoid possible ground looping problem?

c)In your daily mastering tasks, employing the OCL2 as the only compressor in the chain... Have  you guys  ever used the FAST MODE, where it is said to be "used"  also for tight program compression, whenever you do not want to hear the unit working.

d)When moving the Output gain, sometimes I listen to a very low noise. Ok, my unit was purchased with one year of usage. It could be that.

Thanks to all and nice 2007.

Many thanks, Steve. Your info did help me a lot.

Just one more thing (not asking for a cake recepit.lol):
Concerning the  OCL2 for mastering tasks, which range of release times have you been using mostly?
I do itend to enter the analog world (still climbing in small steps) and with my digital TDM gear I have been mostly using settings like 10ms (attack) and 0.7s (release).

I use fast attack mode probably 30% of the time. It starts working before the VU meter can respond, so listen carefully, but it works wonders for some mixes...

Are we still talking about mastering?

Look, I know it's mean.  But sometimes the end justifies the mean.

Brad -
I guess Bob was thinking you might do some occasional tracking or mixing work - but based on your previous posts I believe you do only 100% mastering.

And yeah - I can imagine how the fast mode might work great for mastering in certain circumstances - I just haven't come upon these yet in the brief time that I've been working with the OCL-2.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Yah, only mastering here.

The fast attack mode is handy for very transient material that doesn't need to be so transient - IOW, in combination with something more smoothing such as the STC-8, you can clamp down without killing the mix...
