Ouch.... SSL waves demo video....
« on: April 02, 2006, 05:13:28 PM »

OK, I love the SSL. So shoot me... But this demo fills me with fear for the future, a world without reality checks...

The plugins  'boast' "35db of cancellation in some cases"... is that really similar enough emulation?

"We have been able to duplicate the familiar zipper sound when you have the SSL gate fast attack in"  er, hello SSL tech support?

WTF??

"The beauty of the SSL black EQ is that you can boost 15dB of EQ and it will not blow your ears out"

...do tell...

Now on to the G series EQ..... G - sus rice...!!!

"The great thing about SSL is that when you boost the gain and you change the Q the gain will change accordingly -the narrower the Q the more gain you get and the...  uh... wider the Q is the less gain you get and it's something that changes automatically"

Whoa dude... what have you been smoking?

what a tough crowd... it's not a training video, it is a news report, so none of you could have done a better job.

if you have a complaint about the plug-ins, let's hear it... otherwise please take it for what it is.

SSL will release their own box with 4 shark DSP, 19" rack format. they took out their code direct from their digital desk and throw it in this box. its possible to run 32 instances of the plugin witch is now a some sort of channelstrip.

oh yeah, and its firewire.

I know it's marketing at work, but is it possible that if plugin companies didn't spend so much time emulating hardware but instead making software for software's sake, something interesting might actually be developed?

I know not all plugins are emulations of something, but it seems that the lion's share are emulations.

Some of the Ohm Force stuff, for example.

Excellent point Max.. we need to give it a little more time though, as they are still busy marketing analog brands to us.

It's just early.

In actuality, Waves have spent years developing some pretty generic non-emulated plugins, they have attempted to address the many complaints about digital with the introduction of the 'renaissance' series. I used to beta-test their stuff back in the 1990s and the 56-bit fader on the renaissance compressor was a real step forward.  What concerns me is that the product specialist in that video doesn't seem to have the slightest comprehension of what the SSL does, he seems to think it defies physics... possibly this is a simple language barrier...

Chuck, btw ... did you work on "Money Don't Matter Tonight"?  I have a question about that vocal sound.

JJ,
I did not, I think it was probably Michael Koppelman or Femi Jiya. (Both uncredited, BTW) I could probably still answer your questions about it, though.

I was just wondering what the deal was with the vocal distorting.  Sounds like the compressor, like an LA2A or something.  Just wondering the how and why of it.  Was it intentional or was it one of those accidents they wound up liking, etc.
