I tried this for the first time a few weeks ago - U87 on the front head, and a KM84 about a foot away from the beater, angled in so that it was pointing directly away from the snare.
Works (sounds) lovely.

I think I'm gonna try a dynamic mic next time. Or a condenser with more of a pad!! heh...

That must have been CRAZY loud.  I've got 98s on drums all over the place and never clipped them.  I don't envy you!

Yeah, it must have been a VERY loud drummer. I thought it would be practically imposible to overload a 98. Wow...
