Isolation and set up, location jazz quartet
« on: March 20, 2006, 02:55:04 PM »

This will be my 2nd location recording and I am cringing already thinking about leakage.
Auditorium recording. No audience.

How would you have them (face) set up grand, trumpet, upright and drums to isolate these instruments with the ability to still see one another.
Here is what I might use for mic's.

piano- pair of umt70s
trumpet- aea r84
upright- direct and a 441 or u87
drums- pair of 480 with hyper/caps and 421 on kick

Thanks
Jim

i think it would be a mistake to isolate them. either set them up how they prefer when playing live, or how you want to hear them (in terms of stereo image). if you can, put up a stereo pair & use the close mics for focus & fine tuning. beware using a DI on upright bass.

cheers,

Bleed can be your friend.

It's not the end of the world if you get leakage that works; just remember this kind of thing is different from the controlled environs of a studio and you need to do everything to keep it special.

I'm currently in the midst of my big location season and I'm familiar with the fear that goes along with it but in the end it is what it is. Saturday I'm tracking four groups with 5 minutes or less changeover, one is a 9 piece shout group, another is a 7 piece gospel   steel group, with a 25 piece choir wedged in between and a 200+ person choir for the finale. It's gonna be a nightmare but when you do location stuff you have to live for nightmares.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.
