in the past, i have had masters cut to vinyl then to cd
still not the same but it does sound pretty cool

Just starting a new thread with Ross' quote above,
Thats pretty interesting,
I've heard about other people trying that as well (Tricky - the artist?) and always wondered what that would do with the sound.

A producer I know in the UK has said the best sound he has ever heard is the tracks playing back from lacquer master (1st step in vinyl production) on a Garrard 401 turntable..

I've often thought that a big part of what we are missing in digital-land is surface noise from vinyl / tape hiss..
IMO that adds a certain sonic glue that our brains mostly filter out but when its gone we sense it and feel something is missing...for those of us who grew up in the analog era..

The brains of humans are actually spectacularily developed to filter out and ignore the barrage of information our senses are constantly picking up & focus, for the most part, on what's most important..

Those of you on PSW who are married might notice how this feature has a certain selectiveness to it at times,

Ah yes. A mid day break and a peek at PSW nets a proper gut laugh.

I find this interesting. As engineers, we hear things differently. I remember my daughter listening to some of her favorite CD's and I made a comment that tune was squashed and had no dynamic range. She just looked at me with her eyes glazed over as if I just fell off a turnip truck.

Funnily a while ago the teenage son of a friend of mine came by the studio for one of those work experience things from high school - he & his buddy thought they had it made to hang out with 'Uncle Ryan' for a bit in the toyzone then play hooky for the rest of the day, thus shirking 'work day'..
Anyway - after explaining how general idea of how the stuff works & watching their eyes glaze over, yawn etc they perked up quite a bit with the idea of doing a mix,
So they did a 5 minute mix using material from 8 track - which was quite decent all things considered,
I was going to burn it to CDR from the Masterlink so they could take it to their class and I was amazed that INSTANTLY the DSP maximizing limiter was vetoed when I demonstrated the difference <without saying anything at all to influence the opinion eg:' smashing sucks' or whatever>,
literally he just about jumped out of his chair saying 'no way!'..
I was pretty amazed by that especially since he's from the generation thats grown up with 'bad audio' mp3, file sharing etc and mainly likes RAP music....
