Recently I picked up a CD box set from 70's French composer Igor Wakhevitch - his releases are mega rare and were highly influential for a number of underground artists,

I'd heard some of these albums years ago because someone I know was collecting the $$ rare original LPS.

The music sounds to me kind of like an evil Frank Zappa with rock, electronic and symphonic elements all fused together.

I don't know much about Igor himself except he did this severely strange music.

The only stuff thats too much for me are the occasional spooky chants straight out of some 70's occult B-movie (!)..

For educational purposes related to our profession as sound engineers I hereby post a link to an example from his classic album 'Docteur Faust':

I just listened to that piece. Dark. It almost sounds like a soundtrack to a Hitchkok (?) film. In that whole piece there wasn't even one major key sig.

If you look into it, you'll probably find most of the "uncommercial projects" the majors used to fund were in fact selling a pretty reasonable number of tickets at live shows.

Right.
AND/OR they thought they'd be "commercial" and it just turned out they weren't.

It was always a business.

What does that have to do with business?

Interesting angle - I didn't think of that,
as indeed all or at least many of the Igor albums were apparently
made as soundtracks for various ballet / dance companies..

I was thinking the same thing myself, and wondering where this notion that the labels were kinder and gentler in the past came from.

The drugs of the time influenced a lot of releases all the way from the inspiration of the music to the blurry eyed signing of artists.

Ludes, acid and weed made some of this stuff "mainstream;" bathtub crank does the same for Emo.

Knuck knuck.

Where are all of the DJ's who pissed on the concept of formats?

Yeah, at WFMU.
