I need to write an audio CD that will automatically stop or pause at predetermined spots, and be able to continue on when the play or pause button is pushed again.

This is to be used in a commercial CD player, not a computer CD-ROM drive.

Is this possible?

In a word NO. You need a special player that can stop at every track. They are available for broadcast and theater use but there is nothing that you can put on the CD that will stop a normal CD player at each track,

Yep. When you build the CD, put the Track IDs at the points where you want the CD to stop. Then set the player to pause at each ID...
