There's a good discussion over on GS right now. Quoting myself: "It does not dictate in any way how you make or listen to music. All it does is give the listener and/or broadcaster a tool to deal with huge volume swings from one source to another without having to resort to processing.

For broadcast it offers a huge sound quality improvement over the current methods of ensuring volume consistency."

If we're talking about file based media players, it will be similar in concept to Sound Check in iTunes, but with a more sophisticated loudness measurement algorithm. Video and broadcast is more complex (and well above my pay grade) but our little world of music reproduction should be fairly straight forward.

Does anyone know what music streamers like Pandora use?

The conference looks extremely interesting, and I'll be living in Italy by then, so I signed up for it. Maybe see some of you there?

I don't really know what I think about standards for loudness right now, I'll need to research these two new standards fully before I feel qualified to comment, but I do feel that being able to say "Well, that was mastered far too loud because it was WAY over the 'standard'", may give us a powerful tool to help overcome the ridiculous way things are with some music now.

I have been experimenting with the new EBU R128 system with classical music and find it very useful. Using this concept for matching broadcast levels will be a great plus. I am not sure how it will be accepted by the musical community so will await the outcome of this conference with interest.
