TTo the best of knowlege, the 80-8 is 1/2" 8 track. I had one and like a dumb ass traded it for,, {I wont even say what}.

Yes, if it's in good shape, $300.00 is a great deal.

There's a ATR-60 1/2" 8 for sale on e-bay right now that is a GREAT machine for the money.

I've cut about 6 records on one of these. I had to take it in to the shop once..when I dropped it.

It's not super hi-fi, but it gets the job done.

Yeah it is a 1/2" 8 channel 15 ips. Had one back in the mid eighties... with the dbx NR unit...a real workhorse... never really cared for the sound that much... but OK for a semi-pro demo machine.

I had an 80-8 back in the day.  It was a workhorse but didn't sound all that wonderful.  The Oatri 5050 sounded much better to me.

When I got a Fostex 1/2 16 track (B16) to replace the 80-8, I found it to sound better.

Go figure.

I Don't know 80-8 but its successor Tascam 38:
I also remember how huge was the difference between MX 5050 and Tascam !
Really amazing for the same "8tracks-1/2"-15ips" format.
And the Otari was a workhorse too...

Doesn't suprise me a bit that you found the Fos to be better sounding, Randy.
