Carry on WUMP!
« on: April 03, 2011, 01:16:35 AM »

Ello, ello ..

I recognize, I’m notorious for egging the WUMP community into action.
Also, an auspicious kick start to the new forums here at PSW!

Our gracious host Brad is always very welcoming, and our organizer ATOR, will do the needful, and heed our call, as always, if not too busy.

Hoping for some RAP, this time around.

Things have been kinda crazy lately, but yah, we probably should kick off another WUMP. ATOR has informed me that due to various personal reasons he is no longer working in the industry, so I suppose I'll manage this next one (and see if I can do so without dropping the ball, so to speak).

Anyone have a track we can use that they'd like to submit to be mastered?

I have a difficult one if everyone is keen - its quite a different form of music and the artist has said it would be fine to be mastered - it is Chip Tunes Music.  If you are keen let me know.

Sorry about the lack of knowledge, but, what’s a “Chip Tunes Music” !?

I have several tunes, available and ready to go, as I am always working on stuff. Ofcourse, I leave to consensus, if one wants me to submit any etc..

Glad to have you steering us there Brad.

I think it is music recorded and produced 8 bit.

ATOR has informed me that due to various personal reasons he is no longer working in the industry

Sorry to hear about Ator.  Hope everything is well, as it is hard to imagine not being able to work in the field of music.

this particular artist creates all his music on gameboys :D in 8 bit.  the gameboy processor is actually 4bit but you get the idea.  It was a project that made me earn my money thats for sure :D

While I'm sure the GameBoy music mastering was challenging, not sure that it really translates very well nor does a very good job of challenging folks with common issues that we can each try to solve then explain how and why we did so in that particular manner.

That said, if everyone wants to do it, that's fine.

Any other ideas?

Something with some low sub bass might be challenging. Or all acoustic like bluegrass/folk.

it's fine with the band. i can put the mix up on my site or at brad's...someone tell me what to do.

the tune is a fast, kinda bonkers rocker. guitar/synth/bass/drums/vox. tracked to 2" at a posh studio by a good engineer. mixed ITB by me. i had a ball mixing it, it ought to be pretty fun to master.

i would like to be included in this "wump", once set in motion. i've read back into the previous ones and i already know what's expected as a participant. looking forward to it.

i have nothing to contribute as far as a mix, but i'm up for anything.

Ahhh! Yes… 8)
Good to see some new avatars and some old..

I was intrigued reading the bx_Brainworx plug-in approaches, and thought, hmmm.. maybe we should have a WUMP, using only plug-ins.
We’ve spoken of this before, and did not come to fruition.

Will chat with Brad, shortly.
Let’s have some consensus in the meantime, people.

Kayo,
I'm fine with the rock track if that's what you mean by concensus.

I would work entirely ITB anyway, so I will defer to the ones who use outboard gear to express opinions on that.

Looking forward to another round of WUMP.

I've only worked in the box on these and seem to be in there with the hardware folks, plus than you could say "we can only use plugins under a certain price", where do you cut it off, I'm not saying it wouldn't be intresting but I don't think it will give anyone more of an advantage than before, as skill is skill.

i'm only joining if we're not doing an itb only wump. that's like giving a mechanic a whole set of new and different tools to fix the same car. call me a wimp, but i'm not going to change my workflow for a wump ;)

It’s was only an initial dileberation, that’s all. Not the set path for the Wump at hand. Glad to have the consensus and oppinions aired here.

Brad’s about to update me on a few things, and kick of from there onwards.

Hello All,

Brad's just given me the nudge to kick start our very first WUMP on the new PSW forums.. The closing date for entries will be the 20/06/2011. All applicants must jump in before the 21/06/2011.

The song to be picked shortly, and download upload details will be PM'ed to all entrants.

For now we await the closing of the entry pool.
Won't be long WUMPers..

Hello Mastering devotees!
It's WUMP 23, and so far we have:

1.   DOMC
2.   Waltz Mastering
3.   ggidluck
4.   MoreSpaceEcho

14.   UGP
15.   Michael Hynes
16.   BiigNiick
17.   pmx
18.   KAyo

The eventual list will be divided into 10 or more in each group. You may review the sum of both groups, if you wish.

Closing date: 20/06/2011.
Group line-ups: 21/06/2011
Download/Upload Info to be, Private messaged to all entrants: 21/06/2011.
Deadline for Mastered submissions: 30/06/2011

The rules of this traditional mastering jam-up on the Brad/PSW forum, are best explained by our mastering comrade, ATOR.

General info:
-------------------------
WUMP is a project where different engineers master the same mix, comment each other’s work and share what they did and why they did it.
The purpose of the WUMP is to demystify mastering and help each other become better engineers.

Participating in the WUMP means that you:
- make the best master you can in ten days time
- upload your master the last day of the deadline, not before, to the WUMP FTP folder
- download and comment on the other masters of your group
- post what you did to the mix
- discuss the outcome

There will be no revisions.

The WUMP FTP info will be sent to you in a PM.
You’ll need an FTP client to up-/download the files. Here are some freeware versions:
PC: Filezilla
Mac: Cyberduck

Format master:
- 16bit 44.1kHz WAV
- name: WUMPXX-yourname.wav (XX is the WUMP number)

To keep things simple and transparent we go with named files. If you feel that knowing the names will compromise your judgment you could find a way to listen blind.
____________________________________________
Thanks ATOR

Keep you all posted, until kick off..
