Does anyone find it ironic that Neve calls it "True Tape Emulation"?

I heard it at Wagener's on a few sources.  It didn't impress me much, but I have no business reviewing high end gear on this site.

I've been up on some salines.

They hadn't been taken care of very well... they were kinda stiff.

to his defense, he markets it as "True Tape" Emulation, like it's a tape emulator with the branding of "true tape" on it, not as one phrase.

1600 hundred bucks would be cheap compared to the cost of installing a studer and maintaining it, although in this case of course before the pundits run to correct me, there could only be 2 channels down at a time.  9600 (6 boxes) would be req'd to do a decent drum kit, but still could be worth it if it does its job.

$10,000 for 12 channels of tape emulation! there's your studer? or at least an ampex 1600 and a decent console?

There was a review in TapeOp saying that only the 15 ips mode was really practical and that the 7 ips mode on anything other than minute drive really sounded over done. Thats just what i read from the review though, never have seen or heard one myself.

I have the thing and for me its great! It puts weight to the mix.It will give your kick and snare more punch without sounding like a compressor.....also tracking guits. its great more solid. It doent make the material more exciting just stronger.

Has anyone who records to tape used one as an effect?

Or is that too much irony?

my 16 track otari mx70 that i got in excellent head condition for the same price does a great job at "true tape saturation".

I'am curious about the 5042.

if it works well at what it does, then its a cool idea made manifest.
I think i'll try one out.
I'd like to hear more about it from people who've used  it.
