anyone know a great tech for custom mods (urei)?
« on: February 14, 2006, 11:28:28 AM »

hi,

i have a Urei 1620 music mixer that i got out of a dumpster. i have been happily using the mic input as a mic pre for the last 4 years. it's been one of my favorite vocal, kick drum, and acoustic guitar pre's (among many other things).

now i'm thinking what if i had someone install a second mic input card in it (and possibly with a separate direct out). after that, i began wondering what if i could put a pad switch, phase, and phantom in it as well.

i guess my question is- would anyone see this a fruitful pursuit? and if so, who could i get to be adventurous enough to try this?

to my ears, this pre sounds interesting enough to want to try this- but then again- i'm wondering if maybe it sounds this good because it was junk and perhaps it being highly "trashed" is contributing something to the sound that may be lost if it gets cleaned up.

any thoughts?

The 1620 is legendary for being the greatest and best sounding DJ mixer ever made...I think thats why it sounds good (?)

Heres someone doing 1620 mods & repair:
