If you just want the pre's and nothing else, can I suggest the audient 8 channel unit? Same as the desk pre's, but with slightly lower noise. I know it's not as exciting as scouring ebay for an undiscovered gem, but it'll do the job  Smile

If you can use a soldering iron I'd say PM-1K! You can find complete 16 channel boards for around $400-600, and then you'd have enough left over for something "n-ish" to cover your vocal bases.

I can't say enough good things about the PM1K pre's. They're hit and miss on vocals, but on everything else... WOW...

That is tough.

What caliber?

Used API 3124 (only 4CH)
New RNP (4) ~$2000 US
New Syteks (2) ~ $1600 US
Hamptones 4 FET (8CH) or 3 Tube (6 CH).

Used True systems if you can find one or new for ~$2800 US.

Good luck,

George,  It looks like you made a good profit on your Tascam! Wink

That's the way to buy and sell gear! Buy low - sell high....

I wish I had a suggestion on pre amps for you...  You might want to look at RME Octamic, but I don't know if it would sound better than your Tascam...

BUT: (good advice here)It's better to have a two channel high quality pre than an 8 channel shitty one......You can always rent some good stuff for tracking drums, and everything else can be handled with two channels...

Lance may have a point.. I have been interested in racked Yamaha 1k strips, since he constantly posts on how much he likes 'em.

Give them a try - I know you'll have fun putting them together and I think you'll be floored by the sound. I'd loan you my lunchbox, but its dance card is pretty full for the next several months.

People seem to always compare them to Neve and API. They don't really sound like either, but I do think they're on the same level as far as quality is concerned, and they sit nicely between the two. They're punchy and aggressive like an API, but smoother and a bit less "crunchy" in the upper mids (but still very articulate). And they have that "richness" usually associated with a Neve (the difference between milk and cream). I REALLY love the bottom end on these - it's HUGE.

I re-capped one module first and a/b'd it to the others - to be honest I really didn't notice much of a difference (not like I usually do when re-capping other audio gear). If I didn't enjoy the smell of solder so much I probably wouldn't have even bothered re-capping the rest of them.

They're pretty easy to wire in and box up, although I did need a bit of help figuring a couple of things out (thanks Scott Helmke). It's a fun project - and WELL worth the effort. Everything you hear about these things is true. And they're the best value preamps that I know of.

This guy has been selling modules on Ebay for about two years now:

EXCSSAUDIO@aol.com

He had a pair for $150 listed last week that didn't sell, so he might still have them. He's a bit ummm, abrasive, but he's definitely legit (I've bought several recap kits from him as well as a pair of modules).

Drop him a mail and he might be able to hook you up.

Speaking of hit and miss on vocals - I got some excellent vocal tracks through the PM1K last night. Definitely a "hit" with this singer Wink

George,

The True Systems Precision 8 unit can be bought new for U$2300.

They are really good, transparent sounding pres.

my two cents...

George,
Before you purchase please do yourself a favor and check out the JLM TMP8, a very nice 8 channel pre that costs just about what you have to spend.

http://www.jlmaudio.com/TMP8.htm
index.php/fa/2892/0/

I have one and it occupies the channels 1 through 8 slot in my mic pre rack among other such as Amek/Neve 9098s, Millennia STT-1 Sebatron VMP 4000e and a Seb Thorax. I use it all the time on drums but it's great on vocals guitars and line sources as well.

I have also had the chance to compare it against other pres as well like the MP2NV and I think it's just about as good as it gets.

Here's a review I posted;

The ATI unit sounds great, and it has a quite useful limiter on each channel. 8MX2, if I remember correctly.

For a 4-channel unit you can't beat the API 3124.

Vintech has a few units that sound great. Their Dual 72 goes for U$ 1300, which for your budget would give you 4 channels. I never directly compared it to an actual 1272, but I love my Dual 72.

thanx for the replies. I totally forgot this thread.

I went with an AUDIENT ASP008 because it has an optional ADAT expansion. I am very pleased. superclean, nice transient response.

No I dont like the API's. I usually had problems with the hyped highs and lows to mix that correctly.

I wanted to test this JLM but it was not possible here in Swiss (because no one I know has one). My friend bought a Sytek and we are both very pleased!

thanx a lot guys!
