OMNI OVERHEADS
« on: March 28, 2011, 09:38:33 pm »

Do any of you guys have a lot of experience with omni drum overheads, if so how do you position them?

When I'm at the studio I normally use KM-84's or C12's (cardioid) as OH in either ORTF, Mono or "Glyn Johns", but recently I purchased a pair of omni's for my own personal projects at home/not in a proper studio and while I LOVE the sound of them I'm having trouble with the imaging. I set them up as A-B spaced, but no matter where I moved them around the kit the stereo image was lopsided. I finally got them to where I was pretty happy with the image, but I still feel like it could be better.

Are there any tips/tricks to this? I've read that if I were to use a jecklin disk I could use the omni's in ORTF, is this correct? Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Nick

Equi-spaced omni mics work well in many applications - but a Jecklin disk isn't that expensive, and in my experience returns superior results.

Peace.
