Why active?
And what are you looking for, what do you like? which parameters do you expect to be up front and which ones are not so important?

Choosing a stand speaker will probably not give you a dependable bass response.
What is your main problem with the current ones?

And I would say that you WILL need one or two subs if you're using stand-mounted speakers.

Which is one of the reasons I can't wait to upgrade to floorstanders with bass extension... I *hate* sub integration.

I listened to the Dynaudio Air 25's today, I rather liked them but couldn't make up my mind, I need to have them on trial. They're exactly $6.500 BTW.

you could have a look at PMC iB1S actives.
they are within that price range and are excellent speakers, active power is provided by bryston.

i wasnt that impressed when i listened to the air25's and found them somewhat gimmicky too but hey YMMV, monitors are a pretty personal thing and theres so many variables. maybe i just need to move forward with the times

you could also scour the second hand markets for some other options to maximise your cash so to speak. thats what i did when i got new floor standers in here. really made the money go further.
theres a lot out there if you dont mind working to find them.

The Air 25's are very fine speakers. You can't go wrong with them at this price if you insist on active monitors. I do not like the sound of the other AIR series, they are artificially tilted, but the Air 25 sounds pretty "linear" to me.

I 'd look at the PMCs as suggested, and the Quested 3208, but the Dynaudio AIR would concern me. I don't want a speaker that applies digital signal processing and uses internal AD/DA conversion in a mastering studio. I bet these are great in a 5.1 post room, but they're off my list for mastering. Unfortunately, the budget doesn't quite allow you to get into 3-way ATCs like the SC50. That would be sweet.

I'd suggest the PSI Audio 25-3. These impressed me a great deal and might fit in your budget.

I almost bought the 25-3's instead of the Lipinski L707 - it was a tough choice, but the Canadian distributor made it easy for me with their hefty markup. You won't have this same problem, I hope.
