What POS makes you smile?
« on: February 01, 2006, 03:32:02 PM »

Maybe not POS but "inexpensive."

Besides my ears I love my MXR Mini Limiters and the plug ins from Audio Damage. The MXRs are great for stunt compression and distortion. You want to coax punk vocal attitude from a rich suburban kid they can do the trick.

Audio Damage makes great plugs for pennies on the dollar. The Dischord does that early Eventide thing great and Dubstation makes for a great plug version of a bucket brigade delay.

Did I mention the SM-57?

How about the Lexicon LXP-1 in full on distorted mode. It ain't bad for short verbs either.

My MXR Dual Limiter SMOKES (well not literally, at least not since I replaced a bad voltage regulator). I got mine for $60, they used to go for $30-$60 on ebay until people started googling and found the posts on them in these forums. Now you can't touch one for under $250...

I've also got this old K-Mart cash-register intercom mic that I rewired for an XLR output recently. Sounds like a cross between a '57 and a bullet mic, it's pretty cool actually...

The Rat by ProCo.

That tunable filter gets me the right sound in the shortest amount of time.

The RNC is "inexpensive", but I hesitate to refer to it as a POS.  Always meaning to purchase more of them, but seem to pass up every opportunity for more "budgetarily challenged" gear.

Neat thread, more contributions??

Easy....

That is my $30 Pignose....  Everything from vocals to bass and snare ...

I've heard you can actually use them for gtrs as well, but I have never been that radical. Laughing

In my FOH touring days w/ Los Lobos I would on occasion use an Ibanez MSP-1000 on Dave Hidalgo's accordion.

Sorry about your loss.

I wish my trusty Sony walkman was still around, it made one of the best vocal distortion effects known to man.

That and an overdriven Sony M7. Anyone have an M7 for me?

DigiTech TSR 12.

Has some nice multi-voice chorus sounds, nice flangers, and decent delays.

I also have an old Alesis MIDIVerb3.  That POS makes me smile every time I hear how bad it sounds.

What about the Yamaha R1000 reverb.

4 mechanical switches, and E.Q.

It's sound funky, but hey ,I still use it.

Was that the one with the compressor, graphic & notch filter in one channel? I used to have one of those. It didn't suck nearly as much as it should have.

Speaking of which, I still have an Alesis Wedge sitting around....not a great reverb by any stretch, maybe not even a good one, but nowhere near as awful as it should have been for the $99 I paid for it. There are usable sounds on there.

Yup, that's the one.
The comp was a dbx chip, followed by a 2/3 octave EQ then the notch grabber.

That was my take on it as well. But I'll admit to taking a sharpie to the logo.  Twisted Evil

Yeah.. once again, everything I use would be considered a POS.

I even still use an LXP-1 in my live rack. I love it. And an Alesis Nano Comp on snare drum is a thing of beauty. I even get good results with my collection of seventy dollar condenser microphones..both large and small..

You can't make good music with crap..

Alesis 3630 AFTER modding to comply with VCA mfgr (THAT Corp) application notes.  The thing actually sounds good enough that I ditched my RNC and bought another 3630 and modded it too!

The 3630 has the same VCA as RNC, DBX, etc, but Alesis didn't comply with the VCA app notes concerning the impedance of the control voltage feeding the VCA and the bias adjust circuit of the VCA.  Fix those two items and they're good sounding boxes.  Also upgrade the VCA and op-amps and they're great sounding boxes.
